A mature neighborhood of old homes
With many large 19th-century homes refurbished and sometimes turned into hospitality businesses, Concordia has been dubbed Milwaukee's "Bed and Breakfast District." Though small, this West End neighborhood has seen its fair share of history since the 1850s and has been designated a National Historic District. "It's a mature area with houses and neighbors that have been there for some time," says Mary Edwards, a Realtor at Realty Executives Integrity with over 17 years of experience. It derives its name from Concordia College, a university that operated in the area for most of the 20th century. Today, around 2,000 Milwaukeeans call it home, with newer residents seeking to restore its historic homes to their former glory.

A traditional Victorian home in the Concordia neighborhood.
Victorians at lower prices than expected
Impressive Victorian houses fill Concordia's generously wooded, sidewalk-lined streets, most adhering to the Queen Anne design style. Many feature expansive, lounge-friendly front porches, dormer windows and colorful exteriors. More traditional Victorian designs also boast elaborately decorated facades. "The houses have a lot of character and details that can't be found in modern homes," Edwards says. Some more modest yet equally colorful bungalows are around the neighborhood. One may think a neighborhood with such large, ornate homes would have consistently high price tags, but Concordia abodes rarely run higher than $300,000 and have a median price of $100,000.
A short walk to respectable schools
Two public charter schools currently welcome students in Concordia. Woodlands School is within walking distance for everyone in the neighborhood. Rated a B-plus by Niche.com, this campus accommodates kindergarten through eighth grade and offers specialty classes, including French. High schoolers in the neighborhood can attend Pathways High, which provides a student-led, project-based curriculum and is rated a B. Other nearby educational options include the prestigious all-boys Marquette University High School, directly south of the neighborhood. At the same time, two Milwaukee Public Schools locations are less than five minutes by car.

Rotating flower displays and acres of green space
Concordia is in an optimal location for anyone wanting to get the most out of the West End's outdoor spaces. Some of Milwaukee's most frequented parks are five minutes or less away, including Washington Park to the northwest. Here, locals can spread out on dozens of acres of grass, flip through a book beside the large lagoon or enjoy public concerts at the bandstand. The park also offers tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground and a splash pad. To the south of the neighborhood, the iconic Mitchell Park Domes are heaven for plant lovers, featuring tropical and desert flora and a rotating calendar of flower displays.

Fried chicken and “The Champagne of Beer”
Few restaurants, bars or nightlife spots exist within Concordia. Still, several popular options are within walking, biking or easy driving distance of the neighborhood. The well-known and easygoing Daddy's Soul Food & Grille opened nearly a decade ago as the dream project of local chef Bennie Smith, whose father also cooked for a living. Its fried chicken and catfish are always in demand, and its light-filled dining room provides a pleasant setting for catching up with old friends and neighbors. Directly west of the neighborhood is the large Miller Brewing Company campus, where residents can dive into 160-plus years of local beer history with tours and tastings. While a few small grocers and markets are around Concordia, major retail shopping is southwest of the neighborhood along Miller Park Way.

American Family Field is home to the Brewers.
Sports lovers rejoice
For locals who feel at home in the world of sports, American Family Field, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, is just five minutes southwest of the neighborhood. Downtown Milwaukee is a short drive away and a hub of weekend activity. There are festivals almost every weekend, such as Germanfest and Summerfest. When there are no festivals, there are bound to be sports games and farmers' markets to keep Milwaukeeans busy.
Bordered by bus lines and a highway
Concordia is walkable and bike-friendly, so while residents may not need cars, ample parking exists along the streets of Concordia and in private detached driveways behind the homes, accessible via alleyways. A few main thoroughfares intersect and border Concordia, making commutes to downtown easy. Along these same streets are many bus stops serving greater Milwaukee.
