A Milwaukee suburb with urban amenities
An acclaimed language immersion school, a large shopping center and international eateries are just a few amenities that revolve around Milwaukee's Dineen Park, a Northwest Side suburb with a sprawling public green space at its center. "There's a lot of modest homes, and you've got the businesses on Capitol Drive, so it's just a little pocket Milwaukee neighborhood," says Realtor Beth Jaworski, who sells homes in the neighborhood with Shorewest Realtors. Dineen Park offers a wide selection of homes selling for under $200,000, so the neighborhood draws blue-collar homebuyers and renters who often work in Milwaukee's warehouses and factories.
Dining options along West Capitol Drive
Homeowners benefit from shopping and dining options located along West Capitol Drive, on the neighborhood's northern border. Residents can walk to Mi Casa, a laid-back dining atmosphere where lunch meals cost less than $10 and are served with candy-colored bottles of Jarritos. To watch the game or kick back with friends after a long day of work, Dale's of Milwaukee is a low-lit neighborhood sports bar where the walls are adorned with charming antique signs. For a quick bite on the go, folks stop by fast food joints like Wendy's and Subway. Those trying to prepare some international cuisine for their families can stop in at Baraka Food, an African market. Also on West Capitol Drive, residents buy groceries at Aldi. The Midtown Center, about two blocks northeast of the neighborhood, has retailers like Foot Locker, GameStop and Black Beauty Beauty Supply.
Mid-century Cape Cods and ramblers
Over 3,600 people live in Dineen Park's northern half around its eponymous green space (two cemeteries dominate the southern section). The residential area comprises mostly gridded streets, though a few winding roads and cul-de-sacs appear west of the park. Many single-family homes include detached garages, some accessible via driveway, others by a rear alley. Backyards are typically large enough for homeowners to set up patios and cook out when the weather is warm. Almost half of the neighborhood's real estate is comprised of mid-century townhouses and multi-family homes that are rented out as apartments. West Appleton Avenue cuts diagonally through the suburb. To the avenue's west, mid-century Cape Cods sell for between $160,000 and $230,000. And to the avenue's east, mid-century ramblers sell for between $120,000 and $300,000.
A public greenspace central to the neighborhood
Tying the neighborhood together is the 64-acre Dineen Park greenspace, less than a mile walk from all residents. Whichever direction folks arrive from, a tour along the park's network of walking trails will introduce them to its dynamic collection of outdoor amenities. Visitors will catch a glimpse of the duck-filled pond and the adjacent pavilion, which is rentable for events and gatherings. Parents can let their children loose on the playground and splash pad. Competitors can go head-to-head with their friends on the tennis and basketball courts, baseball diamond and 18-hole disc golf course. And for those who need a laid-back afternoon outside the house, many residents unfold picnic blankets and crack open books on the multipurpose field. Holy Cross Cemetery, which takes up most of the neighborhood's southwest corner, and Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, which takes up most of the neighborhood's southeast corner, are each open during daylight hours for residents who like to take strolls through them.
A German immersion school and a STEAM high school
Sidewalks line almost every block in Dineen Park and adjacent neighborhoods so that many students can walk or bike to three nearby Milwaukee Public Schools. About three blocks to the neighborhood's west, Milwaukee German Immersion School welcomes kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The school is in high demand among local families for its objective to help students achieve German fluency before fifth-grade graduation. It has a C-plus Niche rating. The Fifty-Third Street School is ten blocks east of the neighborhood. The C-minus Niche-rated school helps kindergarten through eighth graders expand their minds with creative classes like African drumming and student clubs focused on gardening, robotics and more. Finally, Milwaukee Marshall High School operates two blocks north of the neighborhood. It offers a STEAM-focused Career Technical Education Program and dual-enrollment coursework that helps students earn college credits. The high school also has a C-minus Niche rating. Milwaukee has a school choice system, so parents can opt to send their children to charter and magnet schools throughout the city.
Milwaukee's year-round festivals
Milwaukee is known for its year-round festivals, which bring people together to celebrate food, drink, arts, and culture. "In the summer, there are a bunch of festivals. Summerfest and Irish Fest are popular," says Realtor Elizabeth Mitchell, who sells houses in the area with Keller Williams Realty-Milwaukee Southwest. The annual Summerfest once held the Guinness World Record for "The World's Largest Music Festival." The two-week event hosts globally famous musicians like Lil Yachty, Tyler Childers and Megan Thee Stallion.
Getting around Milwaukee
Because of its proximity to dining, retail and public transportation, it's possible to live in the neighborhood without driving a car. There are public bus stops on North 76th Street, West Capitol Drive, and West Appleton Avenue, which cuts diagonally through the neighborhood. Some residents commute 8 miles southeast to Downtown Milwaukee via Wisconsin 175. For vacations or business trips, residents travel 16 miles southeast to the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport via Interstate 94.
Crime
The CAP Index gives the neighborhood a 7/10 homicide score and a 5/10 overall crime score. The national average crime score is 4/10. The Boys and Girls Club, about 8 miles southeast, provides a safe space for children to spend time.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
