The birthplace of Harley-Davidson and Miller Brewing Company
Two American icons were born in Martin Drive — one a beverage, and the other a fast-moving machine. In 1855, German emigrant Frederick Miller purchased the existing Plank Road Brewery and founded Miller Brewing Company, which operates in the neighborhood to this day. In 1906, William S. Harley and his childhood friends Arthur and William Davidson carried a toolbox and several crates of mechanical parts into a shed on what is today Juneau Avenue and rode out on some of the first Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Miller’s beers grew in number and reputation to become the restaurant, bar and beer-fridge staples they’re known for today. Harley-Davidson motorcycles ascended to a spiritual status within the American imagination, and the brand is synonymous with toughness, speed and freedom. But Martin Drive is not just characterized by these two industry giants; it’s also a neighborhood where people live in historic homes, enjoy parks and have quick access to jobs and transportation.

American Craftsman-style homes
Martin Drive's mostly one-way streets are lined with trees and sidewalks. Most residents are renters, and it's common to find wood-framed, two-story duplexes. The neighborhood's bungalows mix and match structural elements like dormer windows, jerkinhead roofs, covered porches and bases of stone, brick and stucco. Single-family, American Craftsman-style homes sometimes have Queen Anne features, and there is a selection of Tudor Revivals, which have facades featuring timber and plaster. Because the neighborhood was developed in the early 1920s, detached garages are common. Prices range from $100,000 for fixer-uppers to $250,000 for newly renovated properties, meaning most fall well below Milwaukee's median single-family home price. "It's an up-and-coming neighborhood," says Realtor Daniel Balderas, who sells homes in the neighborhood with Modern MilwauKey Real Estate. "You have a lot of sellers who've owned these properties for 15 to 40 years. It's a good opportunity for newer homeowners who are willing to fix up these houses."
Tudor-style homes have sheer roofs and are covered by wood siding and brick.

Washington Park, Highland Park and a community garden
The neighborhood has access to multiple green spaces. Locals can plant vegetables and tend flower beds at the Martin Drive Community Gardens & Pavilion. For those who prefer not to get soil under their fingernails but still want to connect with nature, Washington Park is directly north of the neighborhood, offering 128 acres of green space with basketball courts, soccer fields, miles of trails, a pond for paddling and fishing, an Urban Ecology Center and playgrounds. The park's senior center hosts lunches, carpentry workshops and a garden club. The park also has free summer concerts every Wednesday. Highland Park is located within the neighborhood and has just over 3 acres of green space. In 2022, the Harley-Davidson Foundation donated $350,000 to improve the park. A 30-year-old playground was removed, and a covered picnic shelter, walking trail, playground and pollinator garden are being built. Across the street, Davidson Park occupies about 5 acres of Harley-Davidson's corporate campus. Known as The Hub, this sunken multi-use amphitheater has a view of the old factory, and the park includes over 120 native plant species, many selected by the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, who collaborated with the designers.

The Story School and Milwaukee High School of the Arts
Because of its school choice policy, parents apply to send their children to public and charter schools throughout the city. The Story School, which has a C-minus Niche rating, is on the neighborhood's south end and teaches prekindergartner through eighth graders. The school's English as a second language program helps multilingual learners, and its Achievement Reduction Gap program provides reduced class sizes and personalized instruction for students. Milwaukee High School of the Arts is about a mile east of the neighborhood. It has a C-plus Niche rating, an 87% graduation rate and is ranked by Niche as the best school for the arts in Wisconsin.

Fred's Frozen Custard & Grill and Pete's Pops
Most dining options are concentrated along West Vliet Avenue. Fred's Frozen Custard & Grill has been a Milwaukee staple since 1967, and classic black chalkboards advertise menu items like cheeseburgers, fries and soft-serve ice cream. Just down the street, Pete's Pops sells frozen treats from a 1920s brick building. Six blocks east of the neighborhood, residents can pick up imported goods at Market AB Asian Food or shop at Metcalfe's Market, about 2 miles west.

Professional sports and brewery tours
For a night at the ballpark, the Milwaukee Brewers play games at American Family Field, just over 2 miles south of the neighborhood. The Milwaukee Bucks play basketball at Fiserv Forum, less than 3 miles east of the neighborhood. The Historic Miller Caves, used to keep beer cool throughout the latter half of the 19th century, are now open for tours on State Street. Getting around Milwaukee
Working residents can access several prominent Milwaukee employers. Of course, there's the Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s corporate campus, and Miller Valley — home of the Miller Brewing Company, which Molson Coors now owns — is directly to the south along State Street. Although most residents rely on cars to commute just over 3 miles to Downtown Milwaukee along Interstate 94, others use the public transit system. Bus stops are along West Vliet Street, West Highland Boulevard, North 35th Street and West State Street. The nearest hospitals are Froedtert and Children's Wisconsin, both within 5 miles.

Good neighborhood, it´s pretty good for kids not too far into Milwaukee but not too close to Wauwatosa, somewhere in the middle. Park right across the street great for dogs and community garden. I wish they would fix up the community garden some more but its pretty good now.
