Midtown: "Convenient to all parts of Milwaukee"
The meaning behind Midtown's name isn't tough to guess. Realtor Alex Chou, who sells homes in the neighborhood with Keller Williams Realty, sums it up from experience, "Midtown is convenient to all parts of Milwaukee, midway between major arterials and often a crossroads when you're getting across town." The neighborhood is largely residential, and its houses date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, with classic Victorian architecture reflecting the area's long history within the Cream City. Most residents rent their homes or apartments, and the neighborhood has access to charitable community centers and public transportation. For homebuyers looking in Midtown, the median single-family home price is about half of Milwaukee's median price, and many homes require extensive renovations.

Arts and Crafts and American Craftsman styles
"Midtown has very large, old homes with architecture that you can't get anymore," says Realtor Daniel Balderas, who sells homes in the neighborhood with Modern MilwauKey Real Estate. The gridded streets are lined with trees and sidewalks, and residents enjoy ample street parking. Some houses have narrow alleyways separating them, while others have large yards. Multi-family homes from the late 19th century are priced from $30,000 to $130,000. These homes are generally composed of upstairs and downstairs apartments. Many of these houses were constructed in the Victorian or American Craftsman styles. Arts and Crafts-style, two-story houses are priced from $30,000 to $100,000 for "as-is" homes and get up to $260,000 for newly renovated properties. "There's definitely a lot of good opportunities to build some equity in this neighborhood," Balderas says. There is a small cluster of newly developed contemporary-style homes in Midtown's southeast area priced from $360,000 to $370,000.

Amaranth Bakery & Café and Daddy Subz & More
There are multiple local dining options in and around the neighborhood. Four blocks west along Lisbon Avenue, Amaranth Bakery & Café is a local favorite for coffee and pastries. The Arts and Crafts-style building is pastel green with the business name printed in Gothic lettering. The classic interior has exposed brick walls adorned with local art and a turn-of-the-century stamped tin ceiling. On 27th Street, Daddy Subz & More serves staple American dishes like burgers and hot dogs. Their no-fuss storefront is lined with images of the dishes and shaded by a green and white awning. There are bodega-style grocery options along Lisbon Avenue, like Bright's Food Market and Lisbon Liquor & Food Mart. A Walgreens is on the neighborhood's north end. Since Midtown is — as advertised — midway between amenities, there are plenty of options outside the neighborhood. Pick n Save is one mile away, and The Avenue, a three-story shopping mall, is 3 miles east. The mall's options include T.J. Maxx, Paper Plane Pizza and Planet Fitness.

Home of the Milwaukee High School of the Arts
Milwaukee has school choice, so parents apply to send their children to schools throughout the city. On 21st Street, Brown Street Academy serves preschoolers through fifth graders. Bethune Academy, on 35th Street, serves preschoolers through eighth graders. Both schools receive a C-minus ranking from Niche. On Center Street, North Division High School also receives a C-minus rating. The high school has a program that helps set students up for internships and youth apprenticeships in professional fields. Midtown is also home to what Chou calls "The Milwaukee school if you want to go into theatre or music," referring to Milwaukee High School of the Arts. "People come from all over Milwaukee to attend here," he says. MHSA students choose an arts-focused major — theater, music, creative writing, etc. — and get a daily instructional block focused on their major. Parents must be sure to get those applications in early, though, as auditions and portfolios are part of the entrance requirements. The school has a C-plus Niche rating.

Alice's Garden Urban Farm
On the neighborhood's northeast end, Alice's Garden Urban Farm focuses on regenerative farming and cultural development. "It's like a community hub," Chou says. Volunteer gardeners can join in on the weekly community work mornings or assemble their own work group. The garden also offers open walks through a planted labyrinth, encouraging reflection and appreciation. Products made from the garden are available at select farmers' markets, including the nearby Fondy Farmers Market. This 105-year-old market is open throughout the warmer months, making it a popular spot on summer Saturdays.
