Densely populated yet quaint and quiet
Over 1,300 people have made themselves at home in River Bend, a small, homey neighborhood in Milwaukee's Southwest Side. With various special-interest shops, parks and a shopping center nearby, residents can easily find ways to spend their time off. Honey Creek trickles its way diagonally through this roughly quarter-square-mile neighborhood, giving it the fitting name of River Bend. The neighborhood’s streets are mostly gridded with some ending in cul-de-sacs and backing up to alleys lined with detached garages. Many commuters reside in the neighborhood, as downtown Milwaukee is less than 20 minutes away by car. “It’s perfect for those who don’t want to live right in the city but want to be very close to it,” says Dawn Kamalian, real estate agent at Shorewest Realtors.

A major housing boom from the middle of the century
Those house hunting in the neighborhood are bound to find ranch-style homes from the middle of the century due to a large housing boom in the 1950s and 60s. A few Cape Cods and bungalows are scattered on the residential streets, sticking with the trend of small and modest homes. Houses range from $225,000 to $300,000, with a median price of $260,000. A few multi-unit properties exist in the neighborhood, bringing higher price tags and some renters to the neighborhood. Each house in the neighborhood has a small lawn leading to a sidewalk out front. Many residents enjoy going for a stroll under the tall trees that line the pathways.

Specialized career paths at the nearby high school
While no schools currently operate in the neighborhood, several Milwaukee Public Schools for all grade levels are just minutes away by car or even a short walk. The neighboring area of Root Creek is home to an entire pipeline of public schools, and many residents of River Bend choose to send their school-aged children there. Hamilton High School is rated a C by Niche.com. It offers a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1 and has programs for specialized career paths in engineering, biomedical science, business and finance. Wedgewood Park School and Honey Creek Elementary School are a stone's throw away and receive a C-minus and C, respectively.
Hang out at a quiet park or a busy athletic destination
River Bend is home to one quaint outdoor green space named River Bend Park. While small, residents regularly visit it for its shaded playground, basketball hoops and park benches. It's a beautiful spot to read a book outside or exercise while letting the kids play close to home. For more physical exertion, McCarty Park is nearby and offers many baseball diamonds, paths for walking and jogging, and a public swimming pool for getting a few laps in. In addition to tennis courts and some fields for pick-up games, residents can also take advantage of the on-site fishing pond.

Get lost browsing aisles of curiosities and comic books
American Science & Surplus welcomes visitors to a jumbo cabinet of curiosities, featuring everything from housewares to hobby kits and gag gifts. "You never know what you're going to find," says local real estate agent Beth Jaworski of the store. "Even as an adult, it's fun to go in there and poke around, and it's very fun to go and buy gifts there." Lost World of Wonders fills its shelves with colorful comic books and manga titles, as well as toys and action figures from famed franchises including Star Wars, Super Mario and various anime. While a few familiar fast-food restaurants are in town, people eat local at Buenavista Banquets & Restaurant, a classic Mexican joint, or go to AMF West Lanes for a burger, some wings or a cocktail while they bowl. Taking S 76th Street will lead shoppers to Southridge Mall and the surrounding plazas for grocery shopping and big-name retail stores.

Intersected by main roads for easy commuting
Two major roadways, Oklahoma Avenue and Morgan Avenue, run adjacent to the neighborhood, making it easy to venture east toward Lake Michigan or west into the outer reaches of Milwaukee County. With the interstate less than 2 miles south of River Bend, residents can typically get to downtown Milwaukee in 20 minutes or less by car. Bus lines run along the neighborhood's perimeter, adding some accessibility to the predominantly car-dependent area.
