A crash pad for students, doctors and nurses
In the early 20th century, the homes in St. Joseph were its main selling point. Popular architecture of the time, wide streets, plenty of trees and nearby parks added to the neighborhood's appeal, bringing a diverse group of residents. Now, many homes are over a century old, and the population has changed, but the dense area still attracts diversity. St. Joseph is one of six neighborhoods that make up the larger Sherman Park area of Milwaukee, an area that, according to census data, has large African American and Orthodox Jewish populations. In addition to welcoming diverse backgrounds, the neighborhood welcomes many renters. "Because it's anchored by St. Joe's Hospital, the neighborhood attracts, in a non-negative way, a lot of landlords and renters," says Ben Mullikin, a Realtor with M3 Realty with over 20 years of experience in the city. "People will buy the properties and rent them to students, doctors and nurses, kind of as a crash pad so they can get to work early."
Duplexes and bungalows with a wide range of condition
Trees lightly line the front and back yards of homes on St. Joseph's tightly gridded streets, most of which are intersected by alleyways leading to detached garages and a designated space for garbage collection. The area is known for its oversized bungalows, some borrowing elements from European architecture like Jerkinhead roofs. Tudor-inspired homes also appear around the neighborhood, plus a few Cape Cods, while many duplexes feature American Foursquare designs. Single-family homes sell between $60,000 and $250,000, and duplexes often fall between $80,000 and $300,000. With a median price close to $160,000, St. Joseph homes are nearly half the Milwaukee Metro average of $300,000. Condition of homes and yards vary from street to street, and one home may have overgrown grass and peeling siding, while another shows off trim flowerbeds, garden trellises and freshly painted shutters. Similarly, sidewalks are better maintained on some streets than on others. However, Milwaukee's Street Maintenance Service aims to improve cracked and overrun paths on a rotating basis based on condition.
Concerts at the bandshell at Washington Park
No parks are within the neighborhood's boundaries, but plenty of opportunities for residents to get outside are within a quick drive. Sherman Park is the closest and has a baseball diamond, tennis courts, a basketball court and a playground. Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club operates from the building at the park's center, next to the seasonal splash pad and community garden. Two miles south is the very popular and historic Washington Park. One of the oldest parks in Milwaukee, Washington Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect of Central Park in New York City. In addition to walking trails, sports facilities and a fishing pond, the park is home to one of Milwaukee's most recognizable outdoor music venues. "The bandshell in Washington Park is the only bandshell like it other than the Hollywood Bowl in terms of size and scale, and the sound quality is amazing," says Washington Park Neighbors President Melissa Muller, who organizes the Washington Park Wednesdays concert series. "It has seating for about 40,000 people."
Notable alumni from the area’s closest high school
Students enrolled in Milwaukee Public Schools have their choice of where to attend across all education levels. While all public, charter and magnet schools are open across the city, many residents choose nearby schools for quick commutes. Sherman Multicultural Arts School is at the center of St. Joseph and is within a 20-minute walk or two-minute drive of most residents. The school teaches kindergarten through eighth grade and is rated a C-minus by Niche. The Kennedy Center sponsors the school's Turnaround Arts program and lets kids experiment with drama, music, dance and other creative outlets. Washington High School of Information Technology is in the neighborhood just south of St. Joseph and rated a C-minus. Open for over a century, the school is one of Milwaukee's oldest public schools and where notable alumni like Gene Wilder, Herb Kohl and Bud Selig attended. Orthodox Jewish families can send their children to the private Yeshiva Elementary School, less than a mile away.
Kosher groceries within walking distance of home
Some locally owned restaurants are along the borders of St. Joseph, including Gyros Corner, a Greek restaurant where shish kebab, gyros and Greek combo plates are in high demand at the order windows under a blue and white awning. Dollar General is at the neighborhood's southwest corner, and residents head north to Midtown Center for large shopping trips. The outdoor shopping plaza has a Pick 'n Save, department stores, chain restaurants and clothing stores. Back in the neighborhood, next to the hospital is QuicKosher. Each item in the small grocery store is certified kosher.
Short commutes to the hospital or downtown Milwaukee
Lisbon Avenue touches the southwestern corner of the neighborhood and leads southeast toward downtown Milwaukee, about 7 miles away. The neighborhood is fairly walkable, with schools, convenience stores and restaurants nearby. Also within walking distance is Congregation Beth Jehudah, the nearest synagogue that serves the neighborhood's Orthodox Jewish population. Those looking to leave their cars at home for the day can hop on a Milwaukee County Transit System bus along any of the area's bordering main streets. Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital's - St. Joseph Campus is in the neighborhood, so while it provides St. Joseph residents with nearby medical care and doctors' offices, it also brings the noise of emergency vehicle sirens.
Crime
The neighborhood has an overall CAP Index crime score of 5 out of 10. While this is only slightly higher than the national average of 4, violent crime is higher, scoring up to a 9 out of 10.
