Renovating public spaces and improving quality of life
Helping hands and a passion for community growth define Silver Spring, one of Milwaukee's most populated neighborhoods. Nearly 13,000 people live in the northwestern neighborhood with industrial complexes, thousands of homes and an array of public schools. Despite the many people and buildings, the neighborhood has plenty of green space, parks and places for neighbors to gather. Community gatherings are one of the driving forces of Silver Spring, and many are made possible by the Silver Springs Neighborhood Center. Whether homeowners or renters, the SSNC helps its "very vibrant group of residents," says James Wilbern, assistant executive director. "The neighborhood has undergone a significant renovation over the last eight years," which is visible in new parks, housing initiatives and an increase in well-attended events and programs. While the neighborhood has more renters than nearby areas and a significantly lower income than the national average, residents are committed to improving their lives and the places they call home.

Free programs through the SSNC
Silver Springs Neighborhood Center prides itself on aiding the community through programs, including childcare, teen development initiatives and youth sports programs. They also sponsor team sports leagues and train adults for future employment. According to the organization's website, 94% of students have improved their school attendance record, and over 100 residents have gained full-time employment after participating in its job training program. Westlawn Orchard Community Garden is connected to the Westlawn Gardens apartment development and features dozens of raised gardening beds where community members plant, grow and harvest their food. It's also the central hub for the Northwest Fresh Food Access Council (NW Fresh), which grows and distributes fresh produce for community members who need it. The group holds annual events at the community garden from April to October to celebrate the different points in the harvest cycle. "We put out thousands of pounds of food for residents for free every summer," Wilbern says.
Havenwoods State Forest hosts helpful events
Taking up the eastern end of the neighborhood is Havenwoods State Forest. With 237 acres and 6 miles of trails, many people visit the state forest daily. "There are some people who travel here from far away, but locals use the space most," says Angela Vickio, the Natural Resources Property Supervisor at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. "There are even some visitors we get to see daily." Birdwatching and wildlife watching are common hobbies, and blue and green herons, sandhill cranes and eastern bluebirds take to the trees and paths. In addition to free events like candlelit hikes and an Autumn Exploration Hike, the forest hosts volunteer groups and school field trips. The annual Home and Habitat Fest occurs in the forest in partnership with the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA). It provides resources and opportunities for locals to learn about homeownership and building a safe home. Carmen Playfield opened in the area in the past few years. Rubber floors are under the brightly colored play equipment and swing sets, and walking trails pass by the new basketball courts.

A wide range and relatively affordable housing
The neighborhood's gridded blocks are primarily made up of homes from the first part of the 20th century. Ranch-style houses with brick and vinyl siding are the most prominent. Modest Tudor houses, Cape Cods and bungalows are typical in the neighborhood. Single-family homes are similar in size and yard space and fall within $75,000 to $260,000. Multi-unit houses are less common and sell between $100,000 and $300,000 depending on size and condition. The gridded and sometimes curving streets are often intersected by alleyways that provide access to detached garages for off-street parking and access for garbage pickup. While the homes are like those in neighboring areas, there is a broader range in cost and a lower average cost. Silver Spring homes average $130,000 less than the Milwaukee Metro average.

Public schools to choose from close to home
Silver Spring is a very young neighborhood, where 33% of the residents are under 18, and only 10% are over 65. Having schools nearby is a major draw to potential homebuyers, and many are within the neighborhood's boundaries. Richard Kluge Public School offers a specialized creative arts education. Browning Elementary's facilities include an outdoor greenhouse with an aquaponics system. Both elementary schools are rated a C-minus by Niche. Morse Middle School for the Gifted and Talented is 2 miles north. Since Milwaukee Public Schools has school of choice, residents can apply to attend any school in the district, so long as there is an open seat. One high school option is James Madison Academic Campus, which offers several Advanced Placement courses so students can get a head start on college credit. Its three National Academy Foundation (NAF) Academies also prepare pupils for life after graduation by training them in trades like finance, health sciences, hospitality and tourism. Each middle and high school receives the same C-minus grade from Niche.

Many cuisines on West Capitol Drive
The windows at The Fatty Patty – 76th Street are aglow with red LED lights. Patrons can order and eat in the minimalistic restaurant, where burgers are served topped with veggies, bacon and cheese. Baskets of fries are available with so much cheese on top that the fries are barely visible. North 76th Street can be noisy, with heavy traffic heading south to the restaurants along West Capitol Drive. Mexican, Italian, Chinese and Southern cuisines are available 2 miles south on the stretch, also home to grocery stores and pharmacies. Sentry Foods is in the middle of Silver Spring and within walking distance from many homes.
Getting to Downtown Milwaukee
Several prominent industrial employers operate on Florist Avenue in the northern part of the neighborhood, including Milwaukee Steel Corp and Milwaukee Metal Products. Many employees can easily walk to work from their homes, thanks to the sidewalks that border each neighborhood street. Those who work downtown can travel the 11 miles southeast by car or hop on one of the buses on West Silver Spring Drive, North 76th Street or North 60th Street. Designated bike lanes are along some main roads, while other streets feature signs telling drivers to share the roads with bikers. Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital is 4 miles south, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 18 miles south.
Silver Spring is located just 25 minutes from the Milwaukee City Center.
