Suburban with an urban vibe
Milwaukeeans who reside in Southgate enjoy a mix of urban and suburban amenities. Located just west of Interstate 94, Southgate is centrally positioned between several major public attractions, including the Harley-Davidson Museum, Milwaukee Public Market, Milwaukee Public Museum, Milwaukee County Zoo, American Family Field and Fiserv Forum. South 27th Street, the main hub of Southgate, is a busy, walkable commercial corridor where locals find restaurants, diners, bars, coffee shops, grocery stores, a movie theater, a hospital and dozens of other small businesses lining the street. "People like it here because the area is affordable and accessible to conveniences,' says First Weber Realtor Margaret Harris, who lives nearby and has been selling homes in the area for 10 years.
An eclectic mix of homes through the decades
The housing styles in Southgate are primarily mid-20th-century suburban ranch homes and Colonial revivals, with some early-20th-century bungalows and Cap Cods sprinkled in. Some of the more recent or remodeled homes have garages, and list prices range from $156,000 to $317,000. For $229,000, a buyer can get a 2,205-square-foot five-bedroom, two-bath house with a small yard, less than 1/8 acre. The topography is mainly flat to gently rolling hills, and streets are gridded and tree-lined. “The area offers a great opportunity for first-time home buyers,” Harris says.
