Picturesque homes, central Milwaukee location
In the 1850s, brothers Hiram and Horace Story built a settlement of homes above their limestone quarry. Their legacy lives on—what was once the quarry site is now American Family Field, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Story Hill community makes good on the proximity. "You can literally walk there," says Beth Jaworski of Shorewest Realtors. She has over three decades of experience in the Milwaukee real estate market and lives in Wauwatosa. "A lot of people in Story Hill will actually rent out their yard or their driveway during Brewers games to get some extra money." Nearby highways take Story Hill residents downtown and into Menomonee Valley's industrial and recreational swath, while local parks and the Menomonee River provide pockets of nature.

Homes straight out of a storybook
Compact square yards, concrete walkways and streetlight-trimmed sidewalks set the scene for an eclectic mix of early 20th century homes. "A lot of them have fireplaces and beautiful woodwork and detailing," Jaworski says. "They're really quality homes with old-world charm." Large Tudors with brick, stone and plaster-and-timber facades line many of these streets. Midcentury Colonial Revivals and Dutch Colonials with steep gambrel roofs also appear in the neighborhood, along with rows of 1920s Craftsman bungalows, brick ramblers and Foursquares with Prairie-style influences. Tudors in Story Hill often carry the highest price tags at $450,000 to $500,000 for a five-bedroom home. Some of the neighborhood's bungalows can go for low $200,000, and most other options range from $300,000 to $415,000.

Landfill history and game day noise
Doyne Park was developed over a landfill presumed to be active as early as the 1940s. In response to safety concerns, the city installed a landfill gas control system around the park's perimeter in the late '90s.
Homebuyer hopefuls should know that noise from cheering fans can float to residential areas, along with traffic from the two major highways.
