A historic but bustling enclave
Old doesn’t have to mean outdated, and that’s certainly the case in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point, the oldest neighborhood in the city. With its mix of restaurants, bars and shops, this is a vibrant section of the city, and the homes here offer a broad sampling of turn-of-the-century architecture. “They love the walkability, all the restaurants and art galleries,” local Realtor Judy Huebner says of the residents in the community. “The Third Ward and Walker's Point both get a lot of people that continue to come into the area.”

Walker’s Point has plenty to walk around and enjoy
Walker’s Point is jam-packed with places to grab food, a drink or to see a live show, particularly along stretches like 2nd Street and 5th Street. Botanas Restaurant, on 5th Street, is among the hotspots, a cantina beloved for its margaritas and Mexican pizza. Toast, on 2nd Street, is a popular pick for breakfast — with much more than its namesake dish. Patrons enjoy the hash skillets here, which come in options including chorizo, corned beef, barbacoa and the vegetarian “Hippie Hash” with cauliflower, mushrooms and more. A meal at Toast may be in the offing after a night out at one of Walker’s Point’s bars. Steny's Tavern & Grill is one of the staples, a sports bar with 22 HD TVs and Bloody Marys so popular that they’ve won multiple awards. Last Rites is a bar with regular live music, particularly from punk banks.
Locals can also peruse some of Walker’s Points shops after grabbing a bite to eat. They can go treasure hunting at Antiques on Pierce, grab some new sneakers at Envisions or find a statement piece at The Home Market, a home furnishings store. People here can also grab goods for a home-cooked meal at places like El Rey, part of a Mexican grocery store chain in the city. Crime in Walker’s Point ranks above the national average according to the CAP Index, though the city took positive steps in 2023. Homicides across the city dropped 20% from 2022 to 2023, motor vehicle thefts dropped 22.5% and overall theft dropped 7.7%.
