NASA town with nature and community building
Just north of NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center sits a quiet coastal neighborhood in Brevard County called Mims. About 7,000 people live here, and aside from housing, it's mostly nature preserves and protected parkland. The upper Indian River runs through Mims, as does Mosquito Lagoon, and east of that, a small strip of beaches borders the Atlantic Ocean. Due to its geography and abundance of protected parkland, Mims lends itself naturally to spending time outside. Locals here like hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing and spending time on the Caravel National Seashore's secluded beaches. There are a few museums in town and some locally loved restaurants, and whenever the Space Center launches a rocket, everyone finds a spot in one of Mims' parks or beaches to gather and watch it fly. Many make friends on the grounds of the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park and Museum, a historic landmark honoring the legacies of civil rights activists in Mims. "We encourage our community members to gather and celebrate here," says Carshonda K. Wright, Cultural Center Leader at the museum. "Our grounds are open to the public, so people will come here to hang out or exercise, and they'll strike up a conversation with each other. We want to help people get to know their neighbors."
Houses with a Florida country feel
In Mims, the most common housing styles are manufactured, ranch-style and traditional-style homes, often with touches of Spanish influence. The median list price here is $345,000. Most manufactured homes list for well under $200,000, with price depending on size, acreage and age, while single-story single-family homes typically list for $200,000 to $400,000. Homes that list upwards of $400,000 are usually more elaborate estates, often on large plots of land and with added amenities like pools, ponds and other landscaping features. Housing in Mims has a Florida country feel, as houses often sit back on large, wooded lots, and many have Floridian features like Spanish tile roofs and palm trees in their yards.

Relax on Florida's undeveloped Atlantic Coast
Located in a remarkably undeveloped part of Florida's Atlantic Coast, Mims has extensive protected parkland and nature preserves. It's a nice place to live for those who prefer a quiet lifestyle surrounded by nature, as the area's protected parkland and location along the Indian River and Atlantic Ocean lend itself naturally to getting outside. Some of the big nature preserves in Mims include Scottsmoor Flatwoods Sanctuary East, 1500 acres of undeveloped land along the Indian River; the Buck Lake Conservation Area, which was once a site for pine and hardwood timber production and now has 30 miles of trails; Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which surrounds the Kennedy Space Center and the US Fish and Wildlife Service entered an agreement with NASA to take care of the land's 1500 species of wildlife and plants; and the Canaveral National Seashore, the longest stretch of undeveloped Atlantic coastline in Florida. Along this stretch, locals like to explore completely undeveloped beaches, often miles away from any civilization. Klondike Beach, for example, is 13 miles from its parking lot, making it a completely secluded spot. Other beaches are more accessible, though, like Playalinda Beach, which is a premier spot to view one of the Kennedy Space Center's many rocket launches. Mims also has smaller community parks, like Cuyler Park, which has a rec center; Hatbill Park, a popular spot for fishing; Holder Park, home to the Mims Little League; and Parrish Park, a 17-acre park with palm trees, picnic tables, a playground and a softball field. At Ever After Farms, residents pick peaches and blueberries in the spring, grapes in August and flowers year-round, and they swing by the farm's pumpkin patch in October for its annual Fall Festival.

For a sweet treat, locals swing by the ice cream shop Frisbee's, and for groceries, they head to the Family Meat Market, which serves fresh meat, tacos and sandwiches in addition to produce and shelf groceries. Just south in Titusville, there are additional grocery options like Publix and Winn-Dixie and retail chains like Target, Walmart, Marshalls and The Home Depot. The late-night spot for Mims residents and those rolling through town is the Fill-N-Station, which has pool tables and serves cold beer every night until 2 am, with karaoke nights on Saturdays.

Rocket launches and guided meditations
Just south of Mims sits NASA's Kennedy Space Center, which has regular rocket launches that locals can view from one of the observation decks within the complex or from one of the local parks in Mims. The Space Center also has ongoing events like guided tours, astronaut appearances and temporary and permanent exhibitions. Within Mims, the Mims Scottsmoor Public Library is a hub of community programming, like computer classes, preschool story times and cooking clubs, as is the Harry T. and Harriet V. Moore Cultural Center. This museum honors the legacies of civil rights leaders in Mims and hosts year-round events like plays, guest lectures, summer camps and facilitated community conversations. "We have educational events like speeches and lectures as well as recreational ones like yoga and walking groups," says Wright. "You'll see people out walking and jogging. We have groups meet up here, like a sewing group and a book club." The White Sands Buddhist Center is another excellent spot for a friendly interaction or quiet contemplation. Its extensive gardens with giant statues, granite benches and ponds naturally lend themselves to reflection, but the center also hosts guided meditations every Sunday in English and Vietnamese. The gardens are free and open to the public daily, and locals certainly embrace its serenity.
