Evergreen community planted outside Minneapolis
The Bryn Mawr Hedge—a collection of 300 cotoneaster bushes—spells out this community's name and welcomes residents' home. An apt symbol of the community's pride, it should come as no surprise that this western Minneapolis suburb is also known locally as "the Garden Community," says Annie Child, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. Bryn Mawr offers residents a walkable small-town vibe and community-centered atmosphere, which is garnered by local shops like Cuppa Java and annual events like the Bryn Mawr Garden Tour. Amenities like Bryn Mawr Meadows Park and the Theodore Wirth Regional Park provide residents with spacious outdoor recreation options, without sacrificing their proximity to downtown Minneapolis. “Bryn Mawr flies under the radar, but people live here for a long time,” says Child. “It’s a versatile area and residents can move a few blocks over when they need a larger home, which really speaks to the commitment of the neighborhood.” And with Glenwood Avenue accessible on the northern border, neighbors can commute the 3 miles into downtown without having to hop on the highway.

Cozy bungalows and contemporary new construction
“I’d consider Bryn Mawr an Island compared to surrounding markets like St. Louis Park or Golden Valley,” says Alex Boylan, Realtor with AlexanderGroup Real Estate, nodding to the fact that the real estate market in Bryn Mawr is competitive. With a variety of housing options to choose from, Bryn Mawr appeals to both first-time buyers and seasoned buyers alike. Here, residents will find everything from cozy bungalows and Cape Cods to prairie styles and larger contemporary homes. With a median sales price of $525,000, single-family homes can start in the high $200,000s for a modest three-bedroom bungalow to upwards of $1 million for a newly constructed lakefront property. “There’s a lot of infill happening in Bryn Mawr, where buyers love the area, but the homes are too small, resulting in teardowns and larger builds popping up to accommodate them,” says Boylan, who has been selling in the area for over 23 years. As a result, the average sales price in Bryn Mawr tends to be at least $100,000 more expensive than properties in the Minneapolis metro area.

Skyline views of downtown at Bryn Mawr Meadows Park
Bryn Mawr Meadows Park offers a centralized hub of outdoor recreation for locals. Residents can enjoy a picnic lunch paired with skyline city views, or come summertime spend some time cooling off in the wading pool. For those looking to practice their baseball or soccer skills, the park also features athletic fields and basketball courts. Some residences here are within walking distance of Theodore Wirth Regional Park, which spans more than 750 acres of forest and includes lakefront paths to explore. Visitors can stroll along the wooden boardwalk at Wirth Beach House or utilize the Wirth Lake Canoe Launch for an afternoon paddling out on the water. And with the notable Chain of Lakes nearby, Bryn Mawr residents are also just 3 miles from popular Cedar Lake and the Lake of the Isles. Cedar Lake offers year-round recreation options, from fishing at the pier on West 22nd Street to sunbathing on the beach, and even wintry cross-country skiing.

The annual Bryn Mawr Garden Tour
In July, Bryn Mawr residents can participate in the annual Bryn Mawr Garden Tour. The event, hosted by the Bryn Mawr Gardening Committee, regularly maintains 13 public gardens throughout the community. The tour is self-guided but provides locals with a chance to admire the private gardens cultivated by their neighbors. “People take great pride in their yards here,” says Child. “The Tour is geared toward the immediate community. It brings people together and fosters a collective interest in gardening.”

Local boutiques and The Shops at West End
Bryn Mawr is primarily residential, however, a small pocket of local eateries and businesses like Big Hill Books—an independent bookseller that hosts open mics and date nights—line Cedar Lake Road. The Shops at West End are 3 miles out from the community, and offer big-box retailers and department stores, like Cub Foods, Costco Wholesale and The Home Depot. When dining in the area, locals can start their day with a breakfast sandwich from Cuppa Java, known for its laid-back environment, coffee, bagels and croissants. “Cuppa Java is the heartbeat of Bryn Mawr,” says Child, who has over 20 years experience selling in the area. “It’s located at the center of the retail sector, and it’s common to run into neighbors when stopping in for coffee or a sandwich.” For a meal al fresco, residents look to La Mesa and its outdoor patio, which offers weekly specials and a wide selection of wines from South America. For pizza, folks head to family-owned Bryn Mawr Pizza & Deli, which has been serving up authentic Italian fare for over 30 years.

I've lived here for 30 years and the good and bad thing is that it is a very stable neighborhood. There is a fresh face now and then, but most of my neighbors have been my neighbors for years. Having said that, it's a friendly place for veterans and newbies alike. I disagree that this is a conservative neighborhood. It is my experience that most residents lean left.
