Small urban neighborhood in the Camden community
The atmosphere in McKinley is one of supportive community, whether that means an initiative to get getting neighborhood-grown produce into the hands of residents, or the community gift shop featuring local artists. Part of the Camden section of Minneapolis, McKinley rests on the western banks of the Mississippi River, where the tops of skyscrapers peak over the horizon to the south. Interstate 94 runs through the neighborhood, separating residential streets on the west side from industry to the east. There are nearly as many renters as there are homeowners living in the cozy cottages, bungalows and Prairie-style homes here. Some properties are well preserved, while others need a little TLC, making this neighborhood a solid option for first-time homebuyers looking to be close to what the metro has to offer. “A lot of my clients over the years have liked McKinley’s quick proximity to the northeast part of the city,” says Stephanie Gruver, a 15-year Realtor with Re/Max Results who specializes in selling homes in Camden. “They can go right over the Lowry Bridge and have a little more nightlife over the river,” Gruver says. Home prices range from $130,000 to nearly $380,000.

Tudor bungalows and Prairie style homes for less
Mature oak and ash trees shade the wide residential streets here, with parked cars lining the curbs and young trees lining the sidewalks. While there are some apartments, most of the neighborhood has single-family homes resting on medium-sized lots, minimally landscaped. With varying levels of wear and tear from home to home, it’s not uncommon to see renovations underway as most of the houses were built between 1910 and 1930. Residents living near Interstate 94 can hear vehicles whizzing by on the highway, but a wooden fence diffuses some of the noise. Buyers here can find cozy Craftsman and Tudor Revival bungalows, classic Minneapolis one-and-a-half story homes and larger Prairie-style homes. Average prices in this neighborhood are lower than much of the Twin Cities, typically falling between $125,000 and $380,000.
