A natural swimming pool inspired innovation and community building
Before 2015, natural swimming pools only existed in Europe and on private residences in the U.S. This sustainable technology uses plant life rather than chemicals to keep the water clean, ultimately benefiting the community's health. The city of Minneapolis decided to implement this technology in Webber-Camden's own Webber Park, inspiring a spirit of innovation in the neighborhood. In the mid-2010s, locals began envisioning the best possible future for their community. Food access was a common obstacle, so some raised funds to open a nonprofit grocery store; others saw a need for more diversity in locally owned businesses, so they founded a Black-owned coffee shop and roastery. Living in Webber-Camden is all about innovation, about finding solutions to create a better, more inclusive, more sustainable future.

Local businesses prioritize community needs
"There are a lot of up-and-coming businesses," says longtime resident and Realtor Stephanie Gruver, citing The Get Down Coffee Co. as a reference. When local entrepreneur Houston White and Dogwood Coffee Co. founder Dan Anderson met over coffee in 2015, White expressed discontent at the lack of diversity in the specialty coffee scene. A friendship formed, and later, the two founded The Get Down Coffee Co., a Black-owned coffee shop and roastery. "Houston is amazing," Gruver says. "He gets things done." Another example is North Market, a nonprofit founded after Webber-Camden locals recognized a need for food access in their community. They gathered public and private funding and founded North Market, a grocery store, wellness center and community gathering place. Dessert lovers in Webber-Camden celebrate any occasion with a treat from Thirsty Whale Bakery. Though they offer regular pick-me-ups like donuts and cupcakes, the bakery's specialty is their custom cakes, and they pride themselves on making any vision come to life.

Webber Natural Swimming Pool and a trail that loops the city
In the summer, locals cool off at Webber Park's pool, North America's first public natural swimming pool. This innovative technology includes a regeneration basin near the pool that cleanses the water, creating an entirely recycled volume of pool water every 12 hours. Previously existing only in Europe and private residences in the U.S., Webber Park offers a modern, sustainable solution that's drawn attention to the neighborhood since the pool's opening in 2015. Throughout the year, residents explore Webber Park's walking trails along Shingle Creek that lead to the Mississippi River and bike its trails that connect to the Grand Round Scenic Byway. This 51-mile route loops the city of Minneapolis. In the middle of the neighborhood, dog owners walk their pups around Camden Central Pond's half-mile path.

Historic housing at affordable prices
Webber-Camden has a rich stock of historic housing, some dating back to the 1800s. Craftsman and Tudor homes are common in this neighborhood, and each house on the street has its own unique charm. Though many have renovated interiors, exterior architectural details like molding and wooden beams and structural features like steeply pitched roofs and screened-in porches have often been preserved to maintain the home's character. Locals can stroll Webber Camden's dense and lush residential streets, protected by plenty of shade and only a short walk away from their neighbors. Prices in Webber-Camden run much lower than the average for the Minneapolis metro area and tend to fall between $200,000 and $300,000. "We're typically some of the most affordable housing in the Twin Cities," Gruver says.
