A quiet community with access to high-ranked schools and amenities

Located just west of Minnetonka's center, Tonkawood is known for its quality of life and access to the city's highly ranked public schools. "We get a lot of families that come here primarily for the schools," says Cassie Frick, a Realtor with Edina Realty. "The trail and park system is fantastic, and the lots are pretty and full of mature trees." Though known for its sprawling modern homes, Tonkawood has a variety of housing styles and price points that share the same safety, quiet and access to amenities as the rest of the neighborhood. These perks have drawn families to the community for years. The CAP Crime Index lists Tonkawood as a two out 10, nearly the lowest score a community can have. The national average is four.

Newer neo-traditional estates with Dutch Colonials and midcentury designs

The rolling hills are dotted with meticulously manicured lots, often offering views of the ponds scattered throughout. Homes frequently have between a quarter and a full acre of land, with foliage-filled backyards and two-car garages. Midcentury ranch-style houses run between the low $300,000s and the low $600,000s, while a Dutch Colonial or renovated traditional two-story can be anywhere from the low $500,000s to the low $800,000s. Tonkawood's largest homes are almost always its newest, with construction dates in the 1990s. Frequently neo-traditional, these houses go from the low $900,000s to 1.5 million.

Immersive language programs in Chinese and Spanish at Minnetonka School District

Students in Tonkawood might start at Groveland Elementary School before heading to Minnetonka Middle East School, both of which have an A on Niche. Minnetonka High School has an A-plus from Niche, which considers it one of the state's top five public high schools. Minnetonka School District is well known for its Chinese and Spanish language immersion programs. "If it's important for someone's child to be speaking a second language from their first day of Kindergarten, this will draw them," says Frick. "Most public schools don't have programs like this."

McKenzie Park has various amenities, including a roller hockey court, basketball court and playground equipment. In addition to offering skating lessons, Minnetonka Ice Arena hosts all levels of competitive hockey and is the home of the Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club. The Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail cuts through the city for 15 miles, connecting several public parks and districts. "You can get anywhere on the trails," says Frick. "It's good for the kids, especially because they're not riding their bikes on the streets – they're on the trails." At nearly 15,000 acres, Lake Minnetonka is the largest body of water in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Well-loved by both locals and visitors, the lake has a long history as one of the region’s top spots for boating, fishing and local festivities.
