Former railroad town turned suburban village
About 10 miles east of Syracuse sits the quiet village of Minoa, which was founded in 1913 as a prominent railroad community. While the tracks still run right through the middle of the neighborhood today, residential homes and a quaint Main Street area have transformed this outskirt town into a suburb. "It's one of the best-kept secrets in Onondaga County," says Mayor William Brazill, who has lived in Minoa since he was 8 years old. "There's no thru traffic or stop lights in Minoa because it's not on your way to anywhere." The village is nestled between the expansive Oneida Lake to the north and Green Lakes State Park just south, making this small-town a haven for outdoor enthusiasts who seek an escape from the noise of the city.
The Trappers II outdoor bar is a popular summer spot to enjoy with friends.
Pizza, beer and ice cream on Main Street
Costello Parkway is the main artery that cuts vertically through Minoa, and Main Street – which juts off this road – is where most of the village’s local dining is. "We got $500,000 for a Main Street revitalization grant. The county will pay 75% of the project, and the business puts in 25%," Brazill says. "Businesses that were closed are opening back up and investing their hard-earned money because they believe in Minoa." Spill the Tea Cafe roasts local coffee in-house and shares a space with Infusion Yoga. "They redeveloped an old hardware store, and they've hit a niche in our community," Brazill says. Nearby, Trappers II is best known for its pizza and atmosphere, especially when Syracuse University is playing. They host trivia inside, and the sandy back patio features sand volleyball courts for beer tournaments. “Everyone meets up there after softball games or for birthday parties,” Halls adds. Another watering hole, Charlie’s Tavern, is a small pub with an antique bar. "You can go in there and buy a round of drinks and still get change from a twenty," Brazill adds. After dinner and drinks, Coneheads Ice Cream serves sweet treats from the window. For quick convenience, Sunshine Minoa Food Mart is located on Costello Parkway, but for larger grocery runs, ALDI and Walmart are 4 miles west in East Syracuse.
Midcentury ranch homes and custom Farmhouse Colonials
The narrow residential streets throughout Minoa lead to single-family homes with front yards where oak trees provide shade, and bikes and children’s toys scattered about speak to the family-friendly environment. “It’s the kind of place where everyone that moves there seems to stay,” says Linda Hall, an associate broker with Hunt Real Estate who lives nearby. Older colonials built in the early 1900s sit next to ranch and raised ranch homes built a bit later in the 1960s. These homes typically feature driveways, and some have one-car attached garages, ranging in size between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet and in price from $150,000 to around $350,000. Newer Colonial Revivals built in the early 2000s and brand-new custom builds that offer Farmhouse Revival architectural styles feature longer driveways, multicar garages and covered front porch space. These homes tend to be larger, spanning between 2,000 and 3,500 square feet – some also sitting on a half-acre of land – and prices generally range from $415,000 to $570,000.
A popular choice in Minoa are the single story cottage style homes.
A large portion of Minoa consists of new traditional style homes.

Recognized clubs at East Syracuse Minoa Central High
The East Syracuse Minoa School District, one of the best in Syracuse, serves Minoa. Students can begin at Minoa Elementary, which receives a B-minus Niche grade, before advancing to a 10-1 student-teacher ratio at Pine Grove Middle, which receives a B. East Syracuse Minoa Central High receives a B-plus and is ranked in the top 12% of Best High Schools for Athletes in New York, according to Niche. "We're going to have the best environmental engineers come out of this school," Brazill says. "They can work at the local sewage plant, which has aquaponics and a greenhouse that grows tomatoes in the middle of winter in central New York." This program, which partners with SUNY, allows for real, hands-on learning experiences.

Outdoor fun at Oneida Lake and Green Lakes
Residents in Minoa have convenient access to Oneida Lake, a little more than 10 miles north. A popular destination for swimming and boating in the summer, the lake freezes over and becomes a popular ice-fishing spot in the winter. Another popular spot for fresh-water adventures is Green Lakes State Park, just 3 miles to the south. “The color of the water is just beautiful,” says Hall. “It’s clean, and the trails are great. You can swim, camp, hike, and they have concessions stands.” This state park also features the public Green Lakes State Park Golf Course, which offers an 18-hole scenic fairway. Another public golf course closer to Minoa is The Links at Erie Village, which offers memberships and is known to host both tournaments and weddings.
The land for Lewis Park was donated by by Sidney and Mary Smith in 1963.
The Erie Canalway Trail is 10 miles long and takes 3 to 5 hours to walk.

Community events at Lewis Park
Centrally located in the village of Minoa, Lewis Park features outdoor basketball courts, a playground and open field space that hosts many of the community’s events. Each September, the annual Festival in the Park brings neighbors together to listen to live music, watch fireworks and admire a bonfire. "We also have Friday night car shows with certain live bands that bring in people from all over," Brazill adds. More festivities during the holidays include a Tree Lighting Ceremony and a Holiday Cookie Train, which take place on Main Street that borders the park. Just south of Minoa, hikers and cyclists can access the Canalway Trail that runs along the canal and is a segment of the 750-mile Empire State Trail.
Commuting to Syracuse on I-690
Commuters who head into downtown Syracuse to work, attend classes at Syracuse University or explore the city have a quick, 10-mile drive on Interstate 690. Also located downtown is Upstate Health Care Center, which is the closest hospital to the community. Interstate 90 can be accessed just north of Minoa, taking travelers to Syracuse Hancock International Airport 10 miles away. Another nearby interstate is 481, connecting residents to the highly trafficked Interstate 81. This village is predominantly car-dependent, as there’s only one bus stop located by the Eastview Apartments off Main Street.

CSX Railroads and Micron facility
The CSX Railroads and their accompanying rail yards cut horizontally through the center of Minoa, and as a result, freight trains regularly make their way in and out of the neighborhood. This creates background noises of trains chugging along the tracks. "You can hear the train no matter where you are in the neighborhood. Everyone accepts that we have railroad tracks," Brazill says. "But there's no crossing or switching, so there's no whistle." Just 15 miles away in the town of Clay, the semiconductor microchip company Micron is constructing a $6 billion manufacturing facility. “It’s going to be enormous and bring lots of jobs and housing to the surrounding areas,” Hall says.

I honestly love where I live. The location of my home is perfect. In a suburban area with a forever wild wooded area behind it perfect for privacy. I love that here in Central New York we get to experience all the seasons. Sometimes the winters can be harsh but I grew up here so I am used to it. There is always something to do in Syracuse so you'll never be bored. I would definitely choose to live here and raise a family here. The local school districts are wonderful. FM even got named one of the top 25 school districts in NYS. I see nothing but greater improvement and growth for this city. The people here are great and do great things.

My experience with living in Minoa has been terrific. Minoa is small quiet town where everyone gets along with each other. You pretty much know everyone who lives there. Also, it is a town with many ESM students living there.

Minoa is a safe village to raise kids in. Sometimes the Codes Enforcement Officer becomes a little overzealous, making it seem like we live under the control of a homeowners' association. I grew up in and now own the house I live in.
