A vibrant downtown neighborhood with lots to discover
Located in the center of the city, Heart of Missoula is a fitting name for the downtown neighborhood of Montana’s second largest city, but it hasn’t always been known by that moniker. “Heart of Missoula came about in the last 20 years. People who have lived here a long time always just called it downtown,” says Amber Cadieux, a real estate advisor with Engel & Völkers Missoula and native Missoulian. “The reason the name came about is because every person in the surrounding communities commutes here for the culture. There’s a lot of people that come here for the shopping, the food and the diversity of the shops and offices.” While residents of other neighborhoods have to drive or catch a bus to local businesses and events, residents of Heart of Missoula can step out their front door, stroll down the tree-lined city streets and be at their destination in minutes.

Missoula has several events that bring the community together, and many of them take place in Heart of Missoula. “They always have events down there. Every week there’s a farmers’ market on Saturdays. We have parades come through for St. Patrick’s Day and a homecoming parade for the University of Montana football team,” Cadieux says. “So there’s always something going on here. Weekends are usually pretty packed.” The city has two farmers’ markets each week, one at the north end of Higgins Avenue and one on the neighborhood’s south side on the banks of the Clark Fork River. Weekly events are hosted at Caras Park, like Downtown ToNight, which features food trucks and live music by the river. This park also hosts the Garden City BrewFest beer festival and the River City Roots music festival. Many streets in the neighborhood are closed off for these events, but the closures are usually limited to areas immediately around the festivals and don’t impact residents too much.
