A friendly community with easy access to downtown
Rose Park is known for many things—its proximity to Downtown's shopping and dining, the interesting layout of its slanted streets and its modest homes on large, tree-covered lots. However, the neighbors are what make this Missoula community feel like home. “My dog got out while I was at work. My neighbor across the street took the time to chase my dog down, which took over an hour, and bring her home,” says Megan Robson, the supervising broker at Affari Real Estate and former Rose Park resident. “We had moved in not that long ago. So, I barely knew her, but that’s just the way people work here.” That neighborly spirit was evidenced again in 2024 when a strong thunderstorm blew through town and knocked down numerous trees. Robson says in the days following the storm, she saw countless neighbors outside, helping each other clear branches and trees out of their yards.
Local flavors from a cup of joe to a cone of ice cream
Rose Park is a centrally located neighborhood that gives residents easy access to nearby shops and restaurants. The Hip Strip is a section of Higgins Avenue on the neighborhood’s northeast corner, home to local staples like Big Dipper Ice Cream. This walk-up shop has been operating since 1995 and is known for its huckleberry flavor. The shop is open year-round and makes all its ice cream. Drum Coffee on the neighborhood’s south side is a casual spot with an industrial vibe. Owned by the drummer for Fitz and the Tantrums, the coffee shop embodies community spirit by donating to a local nonprofit each quarter. Customers can vote for that quarter’s nonprofit using a token they are given after they order. Tagliare Delicatessen is a counter-serve Italian deli serving enormous sandwiches named after rock bands like the Megadeath or the Doobie Brother. Gifts, clothing, records and more are available at Rockin Rudy’s, an eclectic store on Blaine Street serving the community for over 40 years. Local grocery stores include Orange Street Food Farm, full of University of Montana students during the school year. The Good Food Store is another local option known for its natural, local and organic food.
The Big Dipper offers some outside space for locals to enjoy some ice cream.
Rose Park has lots of restaurant options within the neighborhood.

Established Missoula homes on quiet tree-lined streets
Rose Park is one of the most consistent neighborhoods in Missoula in terms of housing styles, primarily featuring bungalows and ranch-style homes. Many of the houses in the neighborhood are from the early 20th century. Some properties have been renovated or had additions built on, but Robson says there are almost no instances of homes being completely torn down and rebuilt in the neighborhood. The area streets are wide and quiet, with mature trees and sidewalks lining each side. “I love this neighborhood. We have old-growth trees. There’s very minimal traffic over here. Folks who are driving around these streets, for the most part, are just driving home,” Robson says. Homes come in a mix of sizes, from 1,000 square feet to nearly 3,000 square feet. Lots are typically at least 5,000 square feet, offering plenty of room for a backyard barbecue or for kids to play. Most homes cost between $500,000 and $800,000, which is more affordable than nearby neighborhoods like the University District.
Pocket parks throughout the Rose Park community
There are multiple parks in Rose Park. The neighborhood’s namesake is home to the Memorial Rose Garden, dedicated to Missoula-area casualties in World War II. The park also has memorials to veterans of the Vietnam and Korean wars, and several picnic tables. Southside Lions Park is a small pocket park with a volleyball court, playground and picnic shelter. The neighborhood is just 1.5 miles from The M hike, a ¾-mile trail up Mount Sentinel to a large concrete “M” on the side of the mountain, which stands for the University of Montana and was installed in 1968. Other nearby recreation spots include Mt. Jumbo in the Lower Rattlesnake neighborhood, the nearby Pattee Canyon Recreation Area and Blue Mountain Recreation Area on the city's west side.
Highly rated Missoula schools
Students in Rose Park might attend Paxson Elementary School and Washington Middle School, each receiving a B-plus from Niche. Hellgate High School gets an A-minus and serves approximately 1,300 students. The school offers electives in agriculture, industrial technology and family and consumer science. Students can also study in the International Baccalaureate program, allowing them to graduate with up to 30 college credits. Loyola Sacred Heart High School is a private Catholic school in the neighborhood that was founded in 1912. The school sends 95% of its graduating seniors to college and produces students whose ACT scores are consistently higher than the Montana state average. The University of Montana is nearby in the adjacent University District neighborhood and is home to approximately 7,000 undergraduate students. The university offers programs in wildlife biology, creative writing, political science, neuroscience and more.
Experiencing Western culture at the Western Montana Fair
Just south of the neighborhood across South Avenue, the Missoula County Fairgrounds hosts several events throughout the year. The biggest event is the Western Montana Fair, held in early August. The fair includes iconic food items, like tater pigs—a breakfast sausage link inside a baked potato. The Missoula Stampede is a rodeo that comes to town during fair week, bringing multiple nights of thundering action to the fairgrounds.
Walk, bike or drive around Missoula from Rose Park
Multiple major thoroughfares pass through Rose Park, including Higgins Avenue and Brooks Street. These roads give residents easy access to downtown and southern Missoula neighborhoods. Driving isn’t the only way to get around, though. “The proximity to downtown is wonderful. It’s very bikeable and walkable if that’s what you want to do to go downtown,” Robson says. Multiple buses also pass through the neighborhood, including Route 7 of the Mountain Line system, which has stops on Stephens Avenue and takes riders south to South 39th Street or north to downtown. Navigating the neighborhood can be tricky due to the slanted streets, a section of Rose Park with streets that run diagonally to the rest of the city’s grid formation. Residents can be driving or walking one direction, and then suddenly be heading diagonal once they reach the slant streets area. This unique layout was created by competing developers in the 1880s and has added a quirky bit of history to Rose Park.
Pattee Canyon offers lots of hiking to the nearby Rose Park neighborhood.
