Mountainous neighborhood with access to natural recreation
Upper Rattlesnake is a secluded neighborhood at the edge of the wilderness, offering the best that Missoula has to offer. "When you're looking to move to Missoula, it's a different pace of life. Rattlesnake is the epitome of that. It's a little slower than a large metropolitan area," says Loren Mostad, a Realtor with Windermere Real Estate and Missoula native. "It's one of the most desirable places to live because it's a nice neighborhood, but it's also the corridor to some of the best recreation in the Missoula Valley." The neighborhood borders the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness, a mountainous 28,000-acre natural area with plenty of activities. While residents enjoy the proximity to nature, they also benefit from a quick drive into downtown Missoula, just 3.5 miles south of the community, giving them the best of both worlds in this Montana city.

Ranch-style and mountain homes in the Rattlesnake Valley
Homes in Upper Rattlesnake cover a variety of styles from the second half of the 20th century. "If you're buying, you're probably looking at homes from the mid-1950s and newer. There's some new development, but there's a lot of older bungalows and Craftsman homes," Mostad says. "There are some really cool Cedar homes up there which is a unique thing in the Rattlesnake area." The cedar homes that Mostad mentioned include log cabins that add a woodsy, rustic vibe to the neighborhood. Ranch-style houses are also common in the community. Most properties are close together, giving the area a suburban feeling. However, plenty of mature trees throughout the community offer privacy for residents. There are a few options for larger lots on the neighborhood's north side, ranging from 1-acre properties to over 15 acres, surrounded by public land and trails. Most of the ranch-style houses and Craftsman homes cost between $500,000 and $800,000. Log cabins cost between $800,000 and $1 million. Houses on larger lots can cost anywhere from $1 million to $2.5 million, depending on the acreage. Buyers should be aware of the high wildfire risk in the neighborhood due to its location on the edge of the forest.
