A distinct divide between the neighborhoods hemispheres

Brookwood is split right down the middle, providing two distinctly different atmospheres for the neighborhood's residents. The western end of the area is home to a large shopping mall and bustling retail location, but the eastern end provides a slice of classic suburban living. The neighborhood is a nice blend of young couples and older residents who take pride in their homes while staying within walking distance of major amenities and a short drive from the city's downtown area. "Mobile has a little bit of everything," says Stephany Hernandez, Realtor and co-owner at the Hernandez Jones group of Wellhouse Real Estate West LLC. "I've lived in Mobile for almost ten years, and I find something I didn't know existed every month. There's a lot of growth here and plenty to explore."

Shopping in the west

Shopping plazas and grocery stores inhabit the main intersections of Mobile, and residents in Brookwood have very close access to one of the city's major malls. Shoppes at Bel Air houses over 90 retail stores and restaurants and has Target and other large department stores as anchors. "There are so many local businesses in the area," Hernandez says. "Of course, we have our chain restaurants and big brand stores, but the locals seek out the locally owned options. The whole county is supportive of small business owners." One of those sought-after spots is The Vault CoffeeHouse LLC. Not only does the café serve tasty pastries and fresh espresso drinks, but it is also a central hub for the area's creatives. Showcases where local artists can display their work and sell it at auction are standard, and musicians and poets can perform for a crowd at open-mic nights.

Houses to the east

Aside from a few condos that sit around $170,000, the homes in Brookwood are single-family dwellings ranging from $75,000 to $375,000. Half the residents rent, but those looking to own can expect to find brick ranches from the middle of the century. In recent years, younger buyers have remodeled homes, bringing some architectural diversity to the neighborhood. New traditional homes, bungalows, and Tudors can be found along the sidewalk streets, often ending in cul-de-sacs. Yards are more generous here than in most of downtown Mobile, lined with tall trees that provide some shaded relief from Alabama's hot and humid summers.

Drive, walk or take the bus

Brookwood is moderately walkable, given its proximity to the shopping center. Still, those looking to get around another way can take a bus along Bel Air Boulevard or Beltline Highway. Sidewalks are standard in the area, and the residential streets are quiet due to a lack of through streets. Downtown Mobile is only 5 miles away, and commuters can get there via Government Boulevard. Residents can reach Mobile Regional Airport in 20 minutes, and Springhill Medical Center is the closest hospital, surrounded by medical offices and centers.

The perfect size park for a small community

Joe A. Bailey Park is in the neighborhood, and while it may be small, it has plenty of ways for residents to stay active. Kids can run around the greenspace and climb on the playground, and tennis and pickleball lovers can get a game in at the courts hidden along the walking trails. An enclosed space is also on the property to let dogs run free for a game of fetch. A few of the area's houses have inground pools in their backyards, but those looking to escape the heat of the humid summers can also join the Woodland Swim Club by purchasing a membership.
