Getting out of town
In Cottage Park, residents enjoy a peaceful lifestyle on the outskirts of Mobile. While the neighborhood is just 20 miles from the city center, this Alabama suburb feels more like a small town. “We’re not too far from Shops on Schillinger, where you can get just about everything you want,” explains Cheryl Wesley, manager at Lantana Trace Apartments. There’s been a recent upswing of home construction that gives the area a modern vibe, but mazes of tree-lined streets still offer shade and seclusion. Combined with its semi-rural setting, Cottage Park’s diverse home and property styles appeal to a variety of tastes.
Cottage Park offers larger lots as well.

From cottages to Craftsman-style
Snug single-story brick bungalows sit alongside low-slung ranch houses and four-bedroom Craftsman-style homes with steeply pitched roofs. The properties are nicely spaced, with attached garages, paved driveways and sprawling front yards, yet the area retains a neighborly feel; neighbors aren’t living right next to each other, but most are close enough for outdoor conversation. In recent years, the area has seen a lot of new construction, with many houses built from the mid-aughts to the late 2010s. Cottage Park homes typically cost between $250,000 and $500,000.
Cottage Park has many cozy, Ranch Style homes on medium sized lots.
Cottage Park also has it's fair share of recently built, Craftsman Style homes.

School days and summer opportunities
Cottage Park students are zoned for Hutchens Elementary, which receives a B-minus from Niche. Dawes Intermediate School, where they’ll spend grades 3 through 5, is next, followed by Causey Middle School. Dawes gets a B-plus from Niche, while Causey gets a B. Then it’s on to Baker High School, which gets a B-plus. At Baker, juniors and seniors are eligible for a summer internship program that will help them navigate the working world in the years ahead. There are jobs available in several different fields, from administration to hospitality to landscaping.
Bernice J Causey Middle School is where many Cottage Park children attend school.

Taking flight
Because Cottage Park is so far west of the city center, public transportation is scarce. Residents need cars for most errands. “We are within walking distance of Publix and Dollar General, but most people drive,” Wesley says. It takes about half an hour to commute to Mobile’s Central Business District. For access to the wider world, Mobile Regional Airport is about 5 miles away.

Locals can stop by Kravers Seafood Mobile when they’re in the mood for fried seafood or crab claws. Also in Cottage Park is Coach Brown’s BBQ, serving hearty brisket, ribs, and pulled pork with classic sides. And Reney’s Honey Butter sells breakfast pastries to complement its selection of gourmet butters, available in both sweet and savory flavors.

A short drive to disc golf
Despite the name, there are no actual parks inside Cottage Park. But West Mobile County Park is just a few miles away and can be reached by car in about 10 minutes. The park features eight lighted ball fields for football, soccer and softball. There’s also an 18-hole disc golf course that hosts tournaments in addition to leisure play.

Mardi Gras in Mobile
Every Mobile resident knows about the annual Mardi Gras celebrations. For those few weeks in late January to early March, “that’s all everyone is focused on,” Wesley says. Cottage Park doesn’t host any events in particular, but it’s easy to join the festivities in other parts of the city.
