Luxury golf course living in central Mobile
Spread out along curvy, tree-lined streets at the intersection of University and Airport Boulevards, the Country Club community is a collection of developments surrounding the member-owned, private Country Club of Mobile. Residents are within walking distance of the University of South Alabama and 10 miles or less from the downtown shops and restaurants. Richard Harski, Realtor and multi-million-dollar producer with Roberts Brothers, who’s been selling in the area for 17 years, says, “Proximity to the country club is a big draw here, but it’s also so convenient to boating, fishing and sightseeing on the bay. And feeding into the bay, there’s a delta network that’s really a hidden gem. It’s just untouched natural beauty in every direction. You feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can still see downtown’s biggest skyscraper in the distance.”
Stately mansions with golf course views
Homes in the Country Club Estates subdivision are custom-built, so no two homes look alike. Some feature Greek Revival elements with stately columns and full-width front porches, while others reflect the French Colonial and Cape Cod styles. Though Country Club Estates isn’t gated, properties tend to be more expensive here than the surrounding subdivisions. Luxury homes over 5,000 square feet usually range from $1 million to $3 million, while smaller houses cost closer to $500,000. Houses outside the golf course community are still quite spacious, with four- to five bedrooms and contemporary open floor plans. These listings can range anywhere from $395,000 to about $1.25 million. “Most homes in Country Club are likely not in a flood zone," Harski says, "but that can vary based on the characteristics of the lot, so I always help homebuyers find out if flood insurance is needed.”
Practice with PGA Professionals at the Country Club of Mobile
The Country Club of Mobile is the community’s signature destination. Its championship-level 18-hole golf course was originally designed in 1918 by the famed golf architect Donald Ross. Recently renovated in 2018, it now features a 9-hole executive course, practice facilities and a pro shop staffed with PGA professionals. Club members can access various other top-rated amenities, including a 100,000-square-foot clubhouse and a state-of-the-art fitness center. The aquatics center features four pools: one for diving, one for recreation, and another two for lap swimming. Along with on-site facilities, Country Club residents can head about 5 miles north to find Municipal Park and the Mobile Botanical Gardens.
Top-rated private schools right down the road
Country Club is zoned for the Mobile County Public School District. ER Dickson Elementary stands at the neighborhood’s far west end, along South University Boulevard. It scores an overall C-plus on Niche, while CL Scarborough Middle earns a C and Murphy High gets a B-minus. Murphy University Center is the high school’s signature academy, with International Baccalaureate and Early College pathways. The district’s highest-ranking private school, UMS-Wright Preparatory, sits about 5 miles down the road and earns an A-plus on Niche.
Grocery stores, retailers and restaurants along Airport Boulevard
Grocery stores, national retailers and some of the best local restaurants surround Country Club. Maple Street Biscuit Company is a popular brunch spot along Old Shell Road. It sits right down the street from Food Pak International, a gourmet grocery store selling hard-to-find ingredients and Mediterranean dishes to-go. Fast-food chains cluster around the University of South Alabama a bit further west. Airport Boulevard is a major commercial corridor along the community’s south side. Pinebrook Shopping Center has a nail salon, medical spa and a Massage Envy at the road’s east end. There’s a Fresh Market across the street in McGregor Square and a Publix on University Boulevard. Over 120 restaurants and retailers are about 2 miles east at Mobile’s largest mall, The Shoppes at Bel Air. Within the community, Harski says, folks “can ride their golf cart over to Post on the Hill for cocktails or to the restaurant at the Country Club of Mobile for date nights.”
Interstate 65 links to top-rated hospitals
Country Club sits in a central part of Mobile, just west of the busy Midtown district. Airport Boulevard is a major throughway, linking to Interstate 65 about 2 miles east. From here, folks can easily access the Springhill Medical Center and USA Health University Hospital. “The University of South Alabama here has a huge medical presence,” Harski says. “A lot of doctors affiliated with the university, area hospitals and ortho groups around the community live in Country Club.” While driving is the most common way to get around, Mobile’s fixed-route bus system makes commuting to the city’s new International Airport easy.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
