Close-knit community in the shadows of the University of South Alabama
The University of South Alabama anchors Hillsdale, and about half of the neighborhood is filled with student renters. But the other half? Thanks to Hillsdale Park and its community center, this small neighborhood has a robust social and recreational schedule. “We are real tight knit,” says Rhonda McDaniel, Facilities Supervisor for the park. “We love Hillsdale.” Six miles west of I-65 and bordering the sprawling campus of the University of South Alabama, Hillsdale was developed in the 1950s as part of an urban renewal project. Just 10 years later, the University of South Alabama bought 750 of the 950 homes in Hillsdale to use as student housing. A variety of single-family home styles fill the rest of this leafy neighborhood with a small-town vibe.

The Sierra Estates subdivision is bringing new homes to Hillsdale
Homes in Hillsdale are a mix of cottages, bungalows, and modified ranch houses. A few midcentury styles are also in the mix. Most homes are made of brick or wood and have small, neat yards next to winding streets. There’s also plenty of woodland for new construction. Brand new homes are filling Sierra Estates, a subdivision in the northwest corner of the neighborhood with sidewalks and tidy front lawns – but not many trees at the moment. Various floor plans are available for the subdivision's one-story brick ranchers, which have garages and distinct Craftsman features. Home prices across the neighborhood range from $110,000 for a three-bedroom red-brick ranch-style home to $359,900 for a new four-bedroom home with craftsman features in the Sierra Estates subdivision.
