A floral paradise in the middle of West Mobile

Residents of Jackson Heights don’t have to choose between spacious properties in the green countryside or access to the many amenities of Mobile: they have them both. One of the first neighborhoods constructed on Mobile’s west side, Jackson Heights places residents close to shopping centers, the airport and the University of South Alabama while also leaving them acre-large lots with abundant, flowering, old-growth trees. “It’s a well-established neighborhood where home values have been trending up for a while now,” says Kyle Malmay, an Associate Broker with Roberts Brothers who has been selling homes in the area for 7 years. “It’s a very architecturally diverse neighborhood, and one of the few in the area that features midcentury modern architecture.” Home prices tend to range between $130,000 and $350,000.

Architectural diversity

Homebuyers have a lot of selection in Jackson Heights. “The architecture is pretty unique for the area. Our standard homes are 1920s bungalows and Craftsman homes,” Malmay says. Midcentury modern and ranch-style homes are also popular throughout Jackson Heights, along with Colonial Revival and Federal homes. “The average lot size is about an acre, and it’s really desirable to have that much land in the middle of a city,” Malmay says. Most of these larger lots can be found in the center of the neighborhood along Michael Boulevard. Otherwise, homebuyers can expect 10,000 to 20,000 square feet of land. Streets can be a bit narrow for parking, but driveways are long enough to accommodate multiple vehicles, and some roads like Seabreeze have dedicated parallel parking spots for cars. Move-in-ready homes range from $130,000 to $300,000, though homes with more indoor space can go a little above this. Houses in need of a little more love go for around $80,000.

Eating and shopping along Airport Boulevard

Airport Boulevard is lined with restaurants and supermarkets. Shopping centers like Festival Centre and the Shoppes at Bel Air offer a host of chains like The Home Depot and Target. A Publix and Piggly Wiggly grocery store can be found to the northwest of Jackson Heights. Residents can dine at familiar restaurants like Olive Garden or BJ’s or visit more local venues like Half Shell Oyster House, where New Orleans-style seafood meets Southern cuisine. There’s also Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux, Malmay’s personal favorite restaurant in the area, which he characterizes as an Applebee’s-type establishment which attracts a young, hip crowd. The menu’s got much to love from a mango tuna bowl to Cajun ribeye, but Malmay’s favorite dish is the voodoo shrimp and grits, which consists of jumbo shrimp and jalapeños wrapped in bacon atop corn grits.

Between airports and highways

Jackson Heights is a car-dependent community. Interstate 65 is less than a 10-minute drive away, and residents are roughly equidistant between Mobile International Airport and Mobile Regional Airport, both about 15 minutes away by car. Bus Route 1 of the Wave Transit System runs along Airport Boulevard, taking residents to the regional airport and the shopping centers by the highway, though it only makes the route once every hour.
