Modest community near many Mobile amenities
In a low-key residential gathering of small modest homes, the Oakleigh community has easy access to St. Stephens Road, which means residents enjoy quick connection to major Mobile-area freeways. Primarily a residential community, locals head into adjacent neighborhoods to shop and dine in a convenient plaza. Dan Otto, Parks Superintendent with Mobile Parks and Recreation, says, “This area around St. Stephens is generally referred to by locals as Toulminville, not to be confused with the Oakleigh Garden Historic District.” A few miles south, recreation options include a baseball-themed playground and a well-equipped rec center.
Charming homes
Ranch-style brick residences primarily built in the 1970s and 1980s are set back from streets, and yards are often shaded with large trees. Some streets offer sidewalks, and others have larger front yards with long driveways. Smaller cottage styles with charming front porches add to the mix. Home prices average between $125,000 and $300,000, and you can still find investment lots for between $13,000 and $25,000. The overall vibe is relaxed and low-key, while you’re still within only around 4 miles of lively Downtown Mobile.

Nearby outdoor amenities
Just a half-mile southeast, the Michael A. Figures Community Center is a multipurpose athletic, swimming and fitness facility that’s open to the public. Says Otto, “At Figures, we have a lot of events and programming, including summer nutrition, basketball leagues, dance, music, and life skills. We also have a computer lab and walking trails. What’s offered changes seasonally, and it’s all in our City of Mobile Activity Guide, which you can find online.”
Henry Hank Aaron Park is near the site where Aaron’s childhood home once stood. An Alabama-shaped monument featuring a Hank Aaron etching is encircled by pavers engraved with names of Mobile’s baseball greats. The centerpiece of this 6-acre green space is its baseball-themed playground. Otto adds, “Hank Aaron played ball as a child on one of the park’s two baseball fields that are still used for youth leagues today. Aaron Park also has basketball courts and a field that’s used by local football programs.”
Less than a 2-mile drive from Oakleigh, locals can fish in Day Lake at the Frederick D. Richardson Jr. Tricentennial Park, named in honor of former local councilman Fred Richardson. Says Otto, “Centennial Park offers a lot. You have a nice walking trail there, a splash pad for the kids, picnic pavilions, and the Three Mile Creek fitness trail. You can even drop in a kayak at the launch on Three Mile Creek.”
