A once-rural area going suburban
For many years, Westlake was a rural area 23 miles from Mobile, but the neighborhood has transformed with new suburban developments popping up in recent years. "The new homes and highly rated schools attract a lot of newcomers commuting to Mobile or Mississippi," says Melanie Susman, Realtor for 15 years with Robert Brothers Inc. These communities of three-to-four-bedroom homes are surrounded by green space and are far enough removed from the city to give folks a slower pace of life, but they don't have to sacrifice convenience, with shopping and activity within a 2-mile radius of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is quiet for most of the year, until Mobile comes alive for their massive Mardi Gras celebration. Westlake is in a convenient location to join in on the festivities and then return home to a peaceful suburban environment.
Westlake is growing in size every year and has many new houses being built.

Newer subdivisions offering different price points
The remaining farmland and lack of wooded space make the area flat and wide open, much like the residential communities. Most homes can be found in suburban communities developed within the last 15 years, like Scott Plantation and Summer Woods, which have paved sidewalks and grassy, midsize lawns. Homes range from a three-bedroom Craftsman for about $225,000 to a four-bedroom Colonial Revival with a pool for $360,000. For slightly higher budgets, look in Jenfield and Grady Place, single-street communities of larger homes and spacious yards developed within the past 5 years. These homes range from $400,000 for a four-bedroom Craftsman to $600,000 for a four-bedroom Colonial Revival with grand front archways and a pool out back.
Westlake is mostly made up of residential areas and one story homes.
Some Westlake homes are larger, estate-style homes built on larger lots.
