Affordable living in Moline

Small, starter homes, leafy lawns and proximity to local schools and shopping are what residents can expect in Molette. This suburban-style subdivision offers homes built in the 1940s that originally sold for $5,000 each. Prices have gone up quite a bit since then, but it still offers an affordable option compared to surrounding neighborhoods, with homes typically selling for below the city’s median. “I’ve never seen a house in Molette sell for more than $125,000. It’s great for first-time homebuyers,” says Realtor Kathy Meyer, who grew up in Moline and has worked as a realtor there for over a decade.

Starter homes at a decent price

The neighborhood's streets are lined with rectangular, grassy lawns and mature trees that bloom brightly in the spring and summer months. Floorplans are on the smaller side, usually around 1,000 square feet, while nearby residential streets offer larger homes with 1,500 and 2,000-square-foot designs. “A lot of these homes have been renovated and updated. Those that haven't usually sell at a lower price point,” Meyer says. Ranch-style homes, split-levels and brick cottages can all be found in this area with yard sizes that vary from around 5,000 square feet to 10,000 square feet. Residents will have plenty of room for landscaping and gardening. Homes in the Molette subdivision range from around $85,000 to around $115,000 because of their small size, while larger homes on nearby streets outside the subdivision list for between $100,000 and $215,000.

It also has an outdoor swimming pool where locals cool off during the hot summer months. For indoor activities, Two Rivers YMCA is about a mile east of the neighborhood. There, residents and their families will find plenty of programs to check out, from swim lessons and group exercise classes to youth and adult sports.

Walking distance to Moline High

Young students can attend either Roosevelt Elementary School or George Washington Elementary School depending on what side of the neighborhood residents live in. Both schools hold C-plus ratings from Niche, an online school review site. Upperclassmen attend Woodrow Wilson Middle School, which holds a B-minus rating, and Moline High School, which holds a B-plus rating. Moline High School offers plenty of options for aspiring artists and musicians, including a wide array of bands, ensembles and choirs. The school opened the Bartlett Performing Arts Center to the public in 2019, a state-of-the-art theater with 800 seats. “One of the great things about Molette is that it’s walking distance from an elementary school, middle school and the city’s only high school,” Meyer says.
