Neighborhood near downtown Montgomery with historic landmarks
One of the most historic areas in Montgomery, Cottage Hill sits less than a mile from downtown, overlooking the Alabama River. The residential neighborhood is named after the first public school district that opened in 1891 and is undergoing revitalization with new businesses and home renovations. "Cottage Hill is a relaxed, quiet community," says AJ Hayles, broker and owner of Red Tails Realty Group. "You'll see locals and tourists intersecting at the nearby museums and shops."
The nearby National Memorial for Peace and Justice kindled the revitalization, memorializing the individuals who were lynched using a combination of sculpture, art and design on a six-acre site. The Station at Five Points was one of the first fire stations in the city and includes a statue and sign marking an essential point on the Selma-to-Montgomery Voting Rights March Trail. The nearby Rosa Parks Museum and Freedom Rides Museum add to Montgomery's rich Civil Rights history.
