Nature enthusiasts will feel at home in North Montgomery, filled to the brim with open green spaces, beautiful rivers and creeks and the iconic Montgomery Zoo. Many homes in the area were destroyed by a tornado in January 2023. Hence, the community is in a period of rebuilding and recovery. Luckily, this community stands together and supports each other when the need arises.

Homes in North Montgomery range from $25K to $70K in the national and craftsman architectural styles. Houses in the area have spacious front yards and are surrounded by mature oak trees. Children in the neighborhood attend Chisholm Elementary School, part of the Montgomery Public School System. Resurrection Catholic School is another option in the community for parents who prefer a religious private school for their kids.

The northern section of the neighborhood is rich in natural beauty. Gun Island Chute, a section of Alabama River, is a popular site for paddleboarding and kayaking. It's the spot for the annual Gun Island Chute Stand-Up Paddleboard Cup, a paddleboarding race. In addition to paddleboards, competitors can register to race in kayaks. Gun Island Chute is also a popular fishing site, with local anglers catching spotted bass, bluegill and common carp.

Tallapoosa River also weaves its way through North Montgomery. This river runs 258 miles, starting in Georgia and running through Alabama. Revered by naturalists, historians and adventurers alike, this river is a part of Alabama's Scenic River Trail.

Arguably the best spot for nature enthusiasts in the area is the Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Learning Museum. Here, locals can explore exhibits on various animal species and see wild, exotic animals up close. The Mann Wildlife Learning Museum provides visitors with knowledge of endangered species and the efforts being made by the center to preserve them.

Adjacent to the zoo is Chisholm Park and Community Center. The park offers a large multipurpose field, playground and baseball fields. The recreation center features a gym, a large meeting room, a game room and an arts and crafts area. Children can also attend after-school and summer programs at the center.

Sheridan Heights Community Center is also within North Montgomery, with several indoor and outdoor amenities. There's a large gym, game room, arts and crafts and meeting spaces. Residents can go for a dip at the center's outdoor swimming pool or practice their swing at the two lit softball fields. A paved walking path weaves around a sizeable multipurpose field, and there's also a blacktop for basketball, tennis courts and a sizable playground.

Yet another North Montgomery recreation center is Newtown Community Center, which hosts a local council on programs for senior adults and after-school programs for kids. There's an outdoor basketball area, open play spaces, a playground and a softball field for residents to enjoy.

Aw Shucks Oyster Bar and Café is a local favorite, serving casual seafood stables like fried oysters and catfish. There are also two popular furniture stores in the area: American Oak and More and Kyser Fine Furnishings. Longleaf Wood Shop offers more than custom-made charcuterie boards and bowls—it provides a space for woodwork and DIY enthusiasts of all skill levels to craft their wares. The space hosts classes on wood shop basics, wood turning, wood cutting and more. If flowers are your forte, Caffco Floral Outlet will be your spot.

Despite the area's recent misfortune due to a tornado, North Montgomery is rebuilding and has something to offer for any hobbyist with a love for the outdoors.
