Picturesque Montgomery neighborhood steeped in history
Old Cloverdale sits in the heart of Montgomery, looking very much like it probably did when it was established over 100 years ago. Meticulously maintained historic Colonial Revivals, Storybook Tudors, and squat bungalows sit surrounded by towering leafy trees, especially on Cloverdale Road and Felder Avenue, where front lawns sprawl under the Alabama sun. Old Cloverdale has not changed much since Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald called it home in 1931; their Craftsman-style house still sits on Felder Avenue, now a museum dedicated to them. Old Cloverdale became a historic district in 1996, and today is home to residents who want to maintain its old-fashioned vibe. "I think people are drawn to the charm of the historic houses and the strong neighborhood feel," says Keith Roll, a real estate agent with Capital Realty Group River Region who sells throughout the city. "There are a lot of cool local restaurants and bars, and you see neighborhood folks in them all the time.”

Petite bungalows and large Colonial Revivals throughout the neighborhood
Most homes here are from the turn of the 20th century, in an eclectic mix of styles, from Tudor to Minimal Traditional to Colonial Revival. They often feature three or four bedrooms and have been thoughtfully renovated to include modern upgrades while maintaining their historic charm. Prices range from the low $200,000s to the mid $500,000s, with high-priced homes often featuring more square footage and bigger lawns. Most homes, though, sit close together on narrow lots. Tall, mature trees dot sidewalk-lined streets, forming a canopy of shade on sunny days, and front yards are often landscaped with shrubs, flowers, and smaller trees. Those looking for a condo or townhouse might score one from Old Cloverdale’s limited stock. Nearly all are situated on the neighborhood’s west side, feature one or two bedrooms and are priced in the low $100,000s to the mid $200,000s.

Locals flock to Cloverdale Park for fresh air and green space
At the heart of the neighborhood is Cloverdale Park, where residents walk along the long trail under the shade of several oak trees. At the park's center is a live oak estimated to be 200 years old. Residents organize a popular spring concert series every year in the park that draws many attendees from across the city. “There are kids playing, people bring their dogs, older people come out. There’s a new band every week, a good mix of music. It’s a lot of fun,” says Roll. Mary Ann Neeley Park is another popular, tree-shaded green space with fountains and benches. Golf enthusiasts may consider joining the privately-owned Montgomery Country Club, which offers golf all year, plus a pool and tennis courts.
