Home to a Maryland Green School

This community is a part of the Prince George’s County Public School System, which received a C from Niche. Students here can attend Deerfield Run Elementary, which serves over 600 pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students and is recognized as a Maryland Green School. This institution’s motto is “Explore, Create and Communicate.” According to state test scores, 3% of children are proficient in arithmetic and 12% in reading at Deerfield Run, a C-graded school by Niche. The popular dining hub is Route 1

Its proximity to well-known employers, like Fort Meade, NSA and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. “Laurel is the ideal location for commuters,” Brian Pakulla, a RE/MAX Realtor with 25 years of experience, explains. “It’s equidistant from Baltimore and D.C. and offers direct access to major highways like 295, 95 and Route 1.” The MARC train provides access to Baltimore Washington International Airport. Reagan National and Dulles International airports are also local. There are also two bus stops within a 2-minute drive from the heart of the neighborhood.

A variety of events

Events held in or around South Laural include U.S. Capitol guided tour with a walking tour from Union Station, scavenger hunts at the Smithsonian and an annual D.C. Black History Film Festival held every Black History Month.

Ties to the Underground Railroad

In 1800, South Laurel was established by families from the South who had escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad.
