The quiet streets and cul-de-sacs of Mandy Farms

Surrounded by dense trees, Mandy Farms is an established Morehead City neighborhood where homes are spaced out on quiet cul-de-sacs. “Part of the neighborhood is in city limits, but most of it is just outside of town,” says Alan Leary, a Carteret County native and Realtor with Re/Max Ocean Properties. “People like that, because you don’t pay city taxes or services, but you’re still really close to everything.” Located less than 4 miles from Atlantic Beach, Mandy Farms has suburban appeal while still offering residents a Crystal Coast, the name given to the middle stretch of the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, lifestyle. “This area is huge for boating,” says Andi Darden, marketing manager for Mary Cheatham King Real Estate. “A lot of people who live here have a boat and go to the boat ramps, or they’re part of the marina. They’ll go out with their family or friends to Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout to see the wild ponies and dolphins.”

A neighborhood with entry-level price points

The two most common single-family housing styles are ranch-styles and split levels. These were typically built between the late 1970s and late 1980s and consist of 1,000 to 2,000 square feet. “The homes tend to be on the smaller size,” says Kathy Calling, a Morehead City resident and Realtor with Coldwell Banker SeaCoast Advantage. “So, it’s a good entry-level neighborhood.” Prices range from just over $200,000 to $400,000. The neighborhood also includes Carriage Crossing, a townhouse complex where homes sell for $100,000 to $200,000. Within the last year, 14 homes went on the market and took an average of 33 days to sell.

The Sports Center of Morehead is within walking distance of most homes. Membership includes indoor and outdoor pool access, gym equipment and club amenities, including saunas. Residents are just over a mile from the town’s take on America’s favorite pastime. “In the last five years, the town has constructed a summer baseball league stadium,” Leary says. “The Morehead City Marlins is the baseball team. They’re made up of high school and college level players that come in for about two months and live with residents.” Rotary Park is also close by and offers a playscape, soccer field and tennis courts. Brandywine Bay Golf Club and Clubhouse is an 18-hole course, and membership includes golf, pool access and social facilities.

Convenient shopping and dining downtown

Downtown Morehead City is a hub for local restaurants, including Full Circle Cafe. The casual eatery has a woodfire pizza oven and an extensive wine menu. “They have great flavor combinations,” Darden says of their pizzas. “Their Facebook page always has their menu for the night.” Morehead City’s prime coastal location means the catch of the day is always going to be fresh. Snapperz Grill and Steam Bar serves a surf and turf menu in a Key West-inspired environment. There’s also a shopping strip along Highway 70 with big box stores like Walmart and fast-food chains. Grocery stores include Harris Teeter and Food Lion.

Chocolate bake-offs and competitive fishing

The Crystal Coast Civic Center hosts the Carolina Chocolate Festival at the beginning of February. In addition to trying chocolatey treats, attendees can participate in the cocoa 5K run or the professional and amateur bake-off. Morehead City also holds one of the largest and oldest fishing tournaments. “The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is a big deal and brings in thousands of people,” Calling says. "It’s $40,000 to enter every category, and the prizes total over $1 million. Michael Jordan’s boat competed last year."

Boating to Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle

Darden says the neighborhood is well-suited for a stroll, but walking for transportation isn't a great option. “You can walk around the neighborhood and to the grocery store, but you would still have to cross Bridges Street, which I wouldn’t say is super walkable," she says. The closest airport is Coastal Carolina Regional, a 30- to 40-mile drive that can take around 40 to 50 minutes, depending on traffic. Carteret Health Care is a hospital about a mile down the road. It’s also a short drive down the bridge leading to Bogue Banks, where Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle sit on opposite ends. “Any place on the Crystal Coast, like Morehead City, does not take long at all to get to these islands by boat,” Darden says.
