Western European charm in the Willamette Valley

About 20 miles north of Salem and less than 40 miles south of Portland is Mount Angel. Known for hosting the largest Oktoberfest in the Pacific Northwest, the small city loves to celebrate its German, Swiss and Bavarian heritage. “The whole town is built around a German theme. It really comes alive during Oktoberfest,” says Realtor Gina Audritsh of Hallmark Properties, who also volunteers every year during the festivities. Home to around 3,500 residents, Mount Angel has a German-inspired downtown district with businesses, shops and restaurants constructed with exposed wooden beams and steep-pitched rooftops. It has its own city government with a six-member city council, a police department and local library.

Mount Angel Oktoberfest

Every year, people flock to the downtown district for the annual Mount Angel Oktoberfest, the largest folk festival in the Pacific Northwest. Established in 1966, it brings more the 300,000 visitors to the city every year. The streets are packed with vendors and patrons imbibing German and Pacific Northwest wines, beers, ciders and spirits, punctuated by the bouncy rhythm of a four-story glockenspiel. When the festivities end, the town returns to its resting heart rate.
