A rural hideaway north of NYC
A long-time getaway for actors, designers and A-list celebrities, Pound Ridge is a rural community untouched by major highways or other transportation hubs. “If you didn’t know you were 45 miles from Midtown Manhattan, you’d link you were in Upstate New York,” says Realtor Liz Fitz with Ginnel Real Estate. Fitz serves on the local chamber of commerce and recently celebrated 25 years living in her Pound Ridge home, 18 of which she’s spent selling real estate. “We’re the non-suburb suburb of New York City,” she says. “People come to our hamlet because it’s hidden in the woods and a fantastic place to hike, jog, bike or enjoy the countryside.”

Homes on 2 or more acres
In Pound Ridge, homes and prices are as varied as the rolling hills and winding roads of Westchester County. Priced from $350,000 for a small cottage to $8.5 million for a luxurious lakefront estate, local real estate offers something for a range of budgets. “Land laws here require that every property be zoned with a minimum of 2 acres to prevent overdevelopment,” Fitz says. “So the parcels of land are large, except those grandfathered in.” One- and two-bedroom townhouses and condominiums are also available in the Oakridge community off New York Highway 123 in the neighborhood's southeast corner.

Downtown and beyond
The Market at Pound Ridge Square features local and organic produce, bakery items, fresh seafood and non-GMO, gluten-free and dairy-free products. It’s part of the quaint downtown area known as Scott’s Corner on Westchester Avenue with several shops and restaurants, including Blind Charlie’s Café, a country-style eatery serving breakfast and lunch, or Booksy Galor, a popular book shop that sells new, used and vintage books and vinyl. Several miles north on Westchester, The Inn at Pound Ridge is run by renowned chef Jean Georges Vongerichten and offers a casually elegant experience with a seasonal, farm-to-table menu. Also nearby, Pound Ridge Community Church operates a preschool program and is the only Christian church in the neighborhood.

Schools that make the grade
Pound Ridge schools are part of the Bedford Central School District and are all top performers receiving straight As from Niche. Pound Ridge Elementary students, for example, participated in a poetry writing program at the Katonah Museum of Art, about 10 miles to the northwest, and eagerly welcomed community members to the school to read stories during World Read Aloud Day. Other outstanding schools include John Jay Middle, which offers a club supporting endangered, service or sheltered animals, and Fox Lane High, recognized for providing equitable access to its Advanced Placement program.

From parks to 10K runs
At centrally located Pound Ridge Town Park, residents can play ball, shoot hoops, swing or cool off in the community pool. More amenities can be found on the east side at Onatru Park, including soccer, baseball and tennis facilities. The nearby Pine Ridge Golf Club was hewn from 172 acres of cliffs and wooded hills. Many dramatic rock formations remain, and the fairways wind through hardwood forests and open meadows. North of the neighborhood, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, one of several preserves in the area, is the largest in Westchester County, offering miles of hiking trails and campgrounds. “The Raven Rocks 10K Run takes place on one of the trails,” Fitz says. “It’s an event that attracts many New Yorkers.”

Showcasing the area’s best
The Pound Ridge Artisan and Flea Market is one of the area’s premier events. “It’s huge,” Fitz says. “Thousands attend for the artists, food trucks, vendors and live music. The town shuts down, and the business district is closed to traffic.”
The Mount Kisco Metro-North train station is a short drive from Pound Ridge.
Getting to and from NYC
The Mount Krisco Metro-North station, about a 10-minute drive west, offers commuter rail service to New York City. Interstate 684 is the nearest highway, about 6 miles west, and connects drivers to state roads and parkways that funnel into the city.
Safe and peaceful surroundings
Only 2,200 households and 5,000 people reside in this area of about 30 square miles, Fitz says, and 30% are New York City weekenders, a figure that has held steady for 25 years. With a low crime score of 1 out of 10 (the national average is 4), it’s no wonder why city weekenders and permanent residents are attracted to Pound Ridge for its safe and peaceful country lifestyle.

We have lived in Pound Ridge for almost 10 years and love the town and surrounding areas. It is a wonderful place to raise a family very as it is very safe and the schools are excellent. The town is very bucolic and is extremely friendly and quaint with wonderful small shops where you can get mostly everything you need. There are also very good restaurants in town. The newly renovated Pound Ridge Square and Market is great. Also lots of open spaces for hiking and outdoor activities and the Town Park and pool are great places to spend family time.
