A boater’s lifestyle in Mt. Pleasant
In 1770, the Magna Carta embarked from a shipyard that would become Hobcaw Point, one of the first coastal Mt. Pleasant communities built outside the town’s now historic Old Village. Nearly 200 years later, this 1950s subdivision retains its reputation as one of the town’s most sought-after neighborhoods with a prestigious yacht club, highly rated schools and spacious homes. “Usually, when people get in there, they don’t move,” says Kimberly Ritter, a Charleston resident and a Realtor with Carolina One Real Estate. Streets are lined with pink and white azaleas, and live oak canopies provide dappled shade. “You’ll see people walking and kids on their bikes,” Ritter says. “There’s only one road in, so there’s no traffic unless [the drivers] live there.” Standing basketball hoops dot the driveways of eclectic midcentury homes and sailboats bob against private docks. With a commercial corridor minutes away and downtown Charleston just 5 miles across the Ravenel Bridge, Hobcaw Point combines a peaceful coastal lifestyle with commercial convenience.
No wait list for Hobcaw Yacht Club
Hobcaw Yacht Club is the town's jewel of outdoor recreation, and Hobcaw Point homeowners have a significant advantage over residents of other neighborhoods. “If you don’t live in the neighborhood, it’s probably a 5-year-plus waiting list to join,” says Ariel Trouche, a Realtor with Carolina One Real Estate. “If you live in the neighborhood and apply for a membership, you’re automatically in.” In addition to hosting a youth swim team at its Olympic-size pool, the club organizes social events like happy hours and holiday parties. Boaters without private docks can use Hobcaw Creek Docks Marina. About 2 miles away, a nautical-themed playground at Memorial Waterfront Park stays cool in the shade of the Ravenel Bridge. Visitors enjoy panoramic views from the park’s pier, then follow the Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Trail south toward the USS Yorktown, a retired warship and key attraction at Patriots Point. Not only is this spot a favorite for watching the sunset over the Cooper River, the campus includes a golf course, athletic stadiums, a maritime museum and a decommissioned submarine.
Private docks on Wando River
Most homes in Hobcaw Point display Colonial Revival, traditional Lowcountry or midcentury ranch-style architecture. Landscaped lawns complement red brick exteriors — a few homes even sport reclaimed bricks from the Old Citadel, a historic arsenal in downtown Charleston that now serves as the Military College of South Carolina. These four-bedroom, 3,000-square-foot properties often come with almost a half-acre of land, in stark contrast to the layout of the adjacent, planned I’On community. “In I’On, I could literally stick my hand out the window and ask my neighbor for a cup of sugar. But in Hobcaw Point, you’re getting more privacy,” Ritter says. Homes at the neighborhood’s edge include deep-water docks that stretch over the salt marshes to Wando River or Molasses Creek. These properties are often the most expensive, ranging from $2 million to $5 million. Renovated homes are priced between $1.5 million and $3 million, while homes needing repairs can cost between $900,000 to $1.2 million. It is possible for flooding to occur during hurricanes or tropical storms, and some lenders require flood insurance for waterfront properties.
Beckham High offers career programs
James B. Edwards Elementary School, rated A-minus, serves kindergarten through fifth grade. A-rated Moultrie Middle School enrolls sixth through eighth grade students, and its campus hosts the city’s Tuesday afternoon farmers market from April through September. B-rated Lucy Beckham High School offers career courses and certifications through the East Cooper Center for Advanced Studies, and some students may graduate as certified nursing assistants, cosmetologists or real estate agents. Beckham High is well-known for its state championship-winning varsity tennis, volleyball and lacrosse teams.
Race in the annual Regatta
In July, neighbors gather for the annual Hobcaw Yacht Club Regatta, a weekend-long event with live music, food trucks, and boat races. Other annual boat races include the Charleston Sunfish Scramble, a distance race on the Charleston Harbor organized by the yacht club’s weekly Sunfish Racing Series. The Fourth of July is well-celebrated with a golf cart and bike parade, Ritter says, adding that many people head to the clubhouse to watch the city’s fireworks display over Patriots Point. Nearby Memorial Waterfront Park hosts the spring Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival, a boat parade honoring local fishing and shrimping crews, and the Annual Sweetgrass Festival, a summer celebration of Gullah Geechee culture.
Langdon’s Lowcountry cuisine
At the heart of Mt. Pleasant is U.S. Route 17, also known as Johnnie Dodds Boulevard, a corridor lined with everything from local businesses, salons and banks to churches, antique malls and restaurants. Standouts include Langdon’s Restaurant & Wine Bar, which serves elevated Lowcountry cuisine and receives a AAA Four Diamond rating. Locally owned Second State Coffee is known for its signature blends and pour-over style. Relaxed spots like Sesame Burgers & Beer give back to the community by contributing sales of specific menu items to local nonprofits, while the creative chefs at Grace & Grit put a new spin on classic shrimp and grits recipes. Route 17 isn’t lacking in grocery stores either; within two miles of each other sit Publix, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Harris Teeter and Whole Foods.
Take Route 17 to downtown Charleston
The neighborhood is just a few turns from U.S. Route 17, one of Mt. Pleasant’s main arteries. This highway runs across Ravenel Bridge into downtown Charleston and connects with Interstate 26, leading to the Charleston International Airport in about 15 miles. Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority, or CARTA, operates buses throughout Mt. Pleasant and Charleston.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
