Coveted Mount Pleasant community with historic charm and shopping destinations
Owning a home in Old Village means soaking up Charleston’s historic charm and salty air outside the bustle of the city. “You’ll be able to enjoy a serene, slower lifestyle,” says Jackie Kelly, Realtor with The Cassina Group and top Old Village seller. It’s one of Mount Pleasant’s first neighborhoods, built along the Charleston harbor during the 18th century. This vintage beach town is known for its vibrant commercial corridors, stunning natural scenery and some of the highest-priced real estate in the area. From their breezy bungalows and centuries-old Southern estates, locals can spend a day outdoors at the marshy coves before winding down at waterside restaurants, watching the tide ebb and flow as boats drift in the distance.

Nostalgic shops, modern amenities and waterfront dining
Boutique shops fill the Pitt Street shopping district storefronts, purveying refined wine, clothing and sweets from stylish setups. Kelly calls the cluster of local shops and eateries “the pride and joy of the neighborhood.” It’s a place where locals can meet up for a quiet cup of coffee or pick up a bottle of wine for dinner. “Pitt Street Pharmacy is the community’s number one gathering spot. It’s like stepping back in time.” The long-standing market serves up grilled cheeses and malted milkshakes to excited kids and nostalgic patrons. For a sit-down meal, locals visit the waterfront restaurants along the Shem Creek shoreline. The outdoor patios at Saltwater Cowboys and Red’s Ice House seat diners watching for dolphins in the water while they dig into the fresh catch of the day. Shoppers can pick up fresh produce at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market on Tuesday afternoons or stop at Publix Supermarket and Harris Teeter around the corner for pantry staples. Coleman Boulevard’s modern shops and restaurants are also close enough for some to walk.

Upscale homes overlooking the Charleston harbor
Old Village homes stand among palms, magnolias and live oaks with branches that stretch over every bend, tangled with Spanish moss. The curved streets are quiet and narrow, many lined with sidewalks connecting walkers to parks, schools, shops and the sunny shoreline. This beach town’s architectural designs range from 18th-century originals to midcentury ranch homes, sleek new builds and towering waterfront properties. Prices start around $500,000 for a modest townhouse or condo and climb to $8 million for a spacious home with a private dock and a swimming pool. It’s uncommon to come across a listing for less than $1 million, and homes lining historic corridors are typically priced higher than those farther from the water. “It’s the most sought-after neighborhood in Charleston County. Lowcountry to a tee. It’s as fancy and wonderful as it gets,” says Andrew Scherl, Realtor at EXP Realty and frequent local seller.

Boating, boardwalks and beaches
Water is a way of life in this coastal community, where locals can walk to the end of the pier at Pitt Street Bridge Park, past the fishing lines and crab traps, for a quiet afternoon kayak ride or to take in the sunset over the harbor. Kids can let loose after school on the playgrounds at Alhambra Park while their caregivers enjoy water views through the trees. Shem Creek Park is one of Mount Pleasant’s most popular, it’s boardwalks brimming with wildlife. Old Village homeowners are also minutes from the sandy shores at Sullivans Island, busiest with swimmers and sunbathers during Charleston’s balmy summer months when living near a body of water is the ultimate luxury.
