Rivertowne is filled with nature and close to the action

Rivertowne is a small residential community near Mount Pleasant's northernmost point. Flanked by the Wando River and acres of Lowcountry marshland, the neighborhood might appear like it's out in the middle of nowhere. However, it’s a short drive to some of Mount Pleasant’s best restaurants and just 15 miles from downtown Charleston. This draws a mix of residents looking for proximity to great dining, shopping and entertainment while having a quiet, nature-filled neighborhood to call home.

Coastal Modern, Cottages and Lowcountry-style homes are common

Rivertowne’s streets are lined with homes built after 1999 in various styles, including Coastal modern, river cottages and Lowcountry. Most are three or four bedrooms, ranging in price from around $700,000 to $1.1 million. Larger homes often sit along the banks of the Wando River and feature five or more bedrooms, sprawling lawns and private docks, ranging from $1.4 million to nearly $2 million. Thanks to an HOA, front lawns are neatly manicured with shrubs and young trees. Karla Leahy, a real estate advisor with Engel & Völkers Charleston, who sells throughout Mount Pleasant and Charleston, says the neighborhood’s range of homes is a big draw. "There are buyers looking for two-story homes with primary bedrooms on the second floor to separate the older kids from the parents. There are families with younger children who gravitate to homes where all the bedrooms are located on the same floor. And there are the grandparents who move here to be close to their grandbabies and are looking for homes with one story," she says.

Children attend A-rated schools within the Charleston County School District

The Charleston County School District serves the area, and while it offers school choice, the schools zoned for the neighborhood all have A ratings on Niche: Jennie Moore Elementary, Liang Middle and Wando High. At Wando High, 228 seniors in the class of 2024 earned a 4.25 GPA or higher and were named Charleston County School District Board Scholars.

Outdoor recreation includes boating, hiking, swimming and sunbathing

Wando River runs along the neighborhood’s west side and connects to the Atlantic Ocean, giving boaters and anglers access to both. The neighborhood’s amenities center includes a playground, tennis and pickleball courts, and a pool. Golfers tee off at the Rivertowne Country Club, which features an 18-hole layout. Laurel Hill County Park is nearby, featuring miles of hiking and biking trails among live oaks and a tranquil lake. The Park West Recreation Complex, also nearby, offers a playground and an indoor pool, plus hundreds of activities for kids and adults to enjoy. Beachgoers enjoy proximity to Isle of Palms Beach, about 11 miles away. “Nobody’s bored here,” Leahy says. “There’s so much to do; you have to beg to stay home.”

Nearby shopping and dining in Mount Pleasant or downtown Charleston

There are many options for shopping, including Harris Teeter, located just outside the neighborhood, and Mount Pleasant Towne Center, about 7 miles away. The upscale shopping center offers big-box stores and a mix of chain and local restaurants. More locally owned restaurants are conveniently close, including Wood & Grain, which Leahy says is one of her favorites. “They have something for everyone. My husband and I can get the grilled octopus, and my kids can get the woodfired pizza. It’s very casual, and you don’t want to wait for a table. It’s a gem,” she says.

Residents attend Mount Pleasant's many events

Residents attend Mount Pleasant’s annual events, such as the Sweetgrass Festival, which takes place in July and celebrates the area’s Gullah Geechee history, culture and traditions. Winter events include the Christmas Light Parade in mid-December and Ice Skating at the Point, which runs from late November to early February and features skating on synthetic ice, bounce houses, s’mores by firepits and other family-friendly activities.

Highway 41 connects residents to I-526 and Highway 17

South Carolina Highway 41 is nearby and connects to U.S. Highway 17 and Interstate 526. The Charleston International Airport is about 22 miles away.
