Coastal community between Shem Creek and Coleman Boulevard

Shem Creek's warm breezes mix with Mount Pleasant’s commercial bustle in centrally located Shemwood, where nature and city destinations are equally close. “You’re 5 minutes from downtown Charleston, 5 minutes from Sullivan’s Island, and you can walk to shops and restaurants,” says Marcia Wray, Realtor at Carolina One Real Estate. Though conveniently accessible, many locals consider Shemwood a hidden enclave, separated from neighboring communities by the creek and the retail-packed Coleman Boulevard corridor. Residents here enjoy a sense of seclusion from Mount Pleasant’s growing development.

Locals launch their vessels from a private dock

Getting out on the water is a prime pastime in Shemwood, home to a popular boat landing and storage spot for the neighborhood’s large population of mariners. From here, locals can take off on a paddleboard or kayak for a quiet ride along Shem Creek. Scenic Shem Creek Park is across the waterway with long boardwalk trails known for stunning sunset views. It’s also a wildlife hot spot, home to egrets, crabs and other coastal creatures. “Because you’re close to Old Village, a lot of people make the trip to Alhambra Park, which has views of the Charleston Harbor,” Wray says. The scenic park is in the next neighborhood, and with three playgrounds canopied by large oaks, it’s a cool, comfortable spot for all who visit.

Mixed housing minutes from the water

With street names like Lazy Lane and Seagull Drive, Shemwood is a beach community through and through. Towering palms and moss-draped oaks stretch over large grassy lawns flanked by homes positioned steps away from the marshy shoreline. “Shemwood has more ranchers than surrounding neighborhoods,” says Andrew Scherl, a Realtor at EXP Realty and frequent local seller. Many of the neighborhood’s established homes date to the 1950s and ‘60s — ripe for renovations and modern touches. The quiet residential streets don’t follow a cookie-cutter design and instead feature a range of styles from Charleston Singles to modern farmhouses and new builds. The neatly landscaped lots reach up to a half-acre, which Wray says is larger than in most neighborhoods in Mount Pleasant. Prices generally range from $650,000 to $900,000, but some waterfront properties with private dock access can top off at nearly $2 million.

It’s roughly 5 miles from Shemwood’s quiet streets to downtown Charleston, positioned immediately across the Ravenel Bridge, which some homeowners can see from second-story windows. Most locals drive, but Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) bus stops line Coleman Boulevard.
