About Mount Washington, KY

About Mount Washington, KY

A growing suburb of Louisville

Once known as The Crossroads, Mount Washington was first established at the intersection of Bardstown Road and Kentucky Route 44 in 1833. At the time of its incorporation, this rural resting place was home to little more than two taverns, a harness and saddle maker, and the stagecoach and freight routes that put the town on the map. "I remember traveling out here when I was a kid and it was just a little two-lane road with not much else around it,” says Tina McCubbins, broker and owner of The Home Store KY. “I can't believe how much things have changed. Today, Mount Washington has a population of nearly 18,500 people, which is more than double the population it had in 2008. Even as the city continues to grow, Mount Washington has attracted an increasing number of buyers with its highly rated schools, small-town atmosphere and convenient location just 25 miles southeast of Louisville.

Mount Washington's expanding housing and job market

Mount Washington offers a range of homes for buyers coming to the area, from brick ranch-styles built in the 1960s to larger traditional homes built in recent years. Most properties come with quarter-acre lots and are dotted with ornamental trees. Older homes tend to have low profiles and solid construction, while more recent builds favor larger, vinyl-sided exteriors and two-story designs. "A lot of the new homes here have pretty interiors. Builders have been coming in and developing large pieces of land to make them," says Donna Thompson, a local resident, broker and owner of Team Thompson 1 Realty. With a median price of $284,000, homes in Mount Washington are considered less expensive than those closer to Louisville, but prices are also higher than the rest of Bullitt County. "You don't find anything selling for under $200,000 anymore; If there was, I'd be buying and flipping it,” Thompson says. “Prices are just getting higher and higher with people flocking out here from Jefferson County." The largest employers within Mount Washington are its local retail businesses, but the city also offers close proximity to major employers like McKesson, UPS Health and the University of Louisville Health. "Most people here are driving up to Louisville or over to Shepherdsville for work," Thomas says.

Local country dining and Bourbon Country beckoning

When it comes to dining and entertainment, Mount Washington is overshadowed by its larger neighbors down the road. "We don't have anything big out here," McCubbins says. Residents won't find big box stores or extensive shopping selections, but they will find locally owned staples like Crystal's Country Diner. "They have really good food, and a lot of local people eat there on the weekends. It's a hotspot for breakfast," McCubbins says. As part of Bullitt County, Mount Washington is also known for its proximity to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Those looking to enjoy the local drinking scene can stop by Gallant Fox Brewing Company, or take a drive to explore well-known distilleries like Jim Beam and Four Roses.
