Anthony-Northside is a residential community just north of Ball State University, or BSU, a 20,000-student public institution in Muncie, Indiana. Ball State is the city’s largest employer and many move to this neighborhood to be a short walk or bike ride away from work. “It’s more faculty and staff than students,” says Amber Greene, the communications director for the city. Anthony-Northside has an active population committed to bettering their community. Their neighborhood association meets bi-monthly to organize efforts like the Anthony Living Quality Maps, a collaborative project with BSU to measure the neighborhood’s quality of life. “It’s awesome to have a university in the community,” Greene says. “The city hosts tons of events on campus. They’re a partner in pretty much everything we do.”
Muncie Indiana Transit System, or MITS, makes frequent stops at BSU and offers transportation to Anthony Northside residents.
Ringing through the neighborhood, Anthony Northside residents can hear Shafer Bell Tower, which sits on the north end of campus.

The Anthony-Northside Neighborhood Association and the Anthony Living Quality Maps
The Anthony-Northside Neighborhood Association convenes every other month at the Community Fellowship Church. The group is responsible for coordinating initiatives like neighborhood cleanups and the Anthony Living Quality Maps project, a 2021 partnership between Ball State Build Better Neighborhoods and the Muncie Action Plan. The goal of the program was to measure quality of living indicators for each home within the neighborhood. Factors measured included how well a home is insulated, home value and lot size, lot greenness, proximity to community amenities and overall living quality.

Students in Anthony-Northside attend Longfellow Elementary School, which receives a C-minus rating from Niche, followed by the C-rated Northside Middle School and B-minus-rated Muncie Central High School. Anthony-Northside is a somewhat walkable neighborhood located half a mile or a 10-minute walk from Ball State University and 2 miles or a 6-minute drive from downtown Muncie. IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, another major employer in Muncie, is 2 miles or a 7-minute drive away. The neighborhood has a MITS bus stop that provides routes to downtown. The White River Greenway is also nearby, and biking is another popular way of getting around. When traveling out of town, residents fly out of the Fort Wayne International Airport, 64 miles north, or the Indianapolis International Airport, 78 miles southwest.
