Indiana native, Ball State graduate and Garfield creator Jim Davis's impact on Muncie cannot be understated. His personal headquarters was located in Delaware County for much of his career, and the city memorializes his cultural impact with Garfield statues hidden throughout the greater community. "On any given day at Cornerstone, we will have people stopping by to look at our historic space, on a quest to find our two hidden Garfield statues," says Kourtney McCauliff, board chair of the Cornerstone Center for the Arts, located just south of McKinley. When walking the "Garfield trail" between Cornerstone and the Minnetrista Museum & Gardens, explorers pass through McKinley, a quiet residential neighborhood home to Muncie Central High School. The neighborhood's historic single-family homes offer walkability to downtown, the local high school and the 40-acre Minnestrista Museum's campus, which features lush gardens to explore. For many Muncie buyers, McKinley provides easy access to everything they need.
Home to Muncie Central High School
Muncie Central High School, a public high school with a B-minus rating on Niche, is located in McKinley, and residents of this community can easily walk to and from the campus. One of the high school's landmarks includes the 1928 Muncie Fieldhouse, the country's fourth-largest high school gym. Muncie Central High School is also known for its marching band, which was crowned the state Champions at the Indiana State Fair Band Day four times, most recently in 2024. Prior to merging with Muncie High School in 2014 to form Muncie Central High School, Muncie Southside High School won Band Day six times in 10 years. Before high school, students in the neighborhood attend East Washington Academy, which receives a B on Niche and Northside Middle School, which scores a C-plus.
Trails, Tuhey Park and Minnetrista Museum & Gardens
Muncie Central High School has a trail around its campus that contours the White River and locals use it for jogging and biking. Along Elm Street on the neighborhood's east end, residents can also access the Cardinal Greenway, a 62-mile rail trail that connects five counties across east central Indiana. The Cardinal Greenway also connects to the White River Greenway, another 5.6-mile trail along the White River. Just west is Tuhey Park, a city park that features a large playground and pool, while to the north sits the Minnetrista Museum & Gardens, a 40-acre campus whose outdoor areas are free and open to the public. "We have beautiful garden spaces and a whole large nature area with a cabin where kids can come and play for free," says Brea Cunningham, the museum's associate director of communications, who adds that people come to the campus for daily activities like bike riding, going for walks and taking their lunch break. "We want this to be a place where everyone in the community is comfortable."

First Thursdays in downtown Muncie
On fall Friday nights, the neighborhood gathers at Muncie Central High School’s football field to support the Bearcats at home games. "On the first Thursday of every month, Muncie's vibrant downtown galleries and venues join together to hold arts-related events for the community," McCauliff says. "Cornerstone is proud to be an anchor and host to exciting exhibits and activities showcasing Muncie's local artists." This art education center hosts monthly pop-ups on first Thursdays, offers art classes for kids and adults and has ongoing exhibits in its Judith Barnes Gallery. Cornerstone is about a 20-minute walk from McKinley. "We are lucky to be within walking distance to all of Muncie's downtown and historic neighborhoods, as well as be on a stop along the MITS bus system," McCauliff says. Late 19th and early 20th-century single-family homes
Most of McKinley's housing was built in the first half of the 20th century, but some homes date back as early as the 1840s. The homes were built in traditional styles, mostly cozy bungalows with some farmhouses and American Foursquares also in the mix. The average single-family home's floorplan is about 1,500 square feet, and, on average, home values here run lower than the average for Muncie. Most homes cost between $50,000 and $100,000, and many need significant renovations. This neighborhood has more renters than it does owners, likely due to its location just a mile from Ball State University.
Newly renovated homes can be found throughout McKinley.

Just west of the White River, Amazing Joe's Grill is another popular restaurant, serving American fare like steaks and chicken sandwiches alongside TVs for watching games and a patio for sipping drinks. Fresh produce and other groceries are available four blocks south at The Downtown Farm Stand, an organic food store with a café, and the nearest supermarket is an ALDI a mile and a half north.
