Just north of Interstate 15 in Murrieta, The Colony is a 55-plus master-planned community set amid the sprawling San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains. First developed in 1989, this gated suburb is now a coveted a community of over 1,500 homes surrounding the California Oaks Golf Course and its resort-style common areas. Residents gather regularly at the central clubhouse for holiday events, game nights and movie nights. "It's not just about having neighbors," says Murrieta Realtor Shane Bernal, "it's about having a safe community that interacts, helps each other out, and enjoys life together." The Colony has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Residents here have quick access to shopping and dining in and near the community, and in the nearby city of Temecula.

The Colony has three private entrances, one staffed by 24/7 guards and adorned with towering palms and a waterfall. The wide residential streets wind gently along neat rows of 1990s new traditional homes with Mediterranean-style elements like terracotta-tiled roofs, arched details and stucco facades. These two- to three-bedroom homes have layouts ranging from 950 to 2,100 square feet, and depending on a home's size and renovations, prices typically range from $520,000 to $650,0000; homes set around the golf course range from $650,000 to $700,000. The Colony Homeowners Association keeps yards and public areas well-manicured, and monthly fees range from $200 to $250.

Then in 2024, Murrieta became one of 11 California cities designated a Fire Risk Reduction Community, so residents here may get reductions on their fire insurance premiums. The closest fire station to The Colony is Murrieta Fire Station #2, set just east of the neighborhood.
