Molding a modern foundry town
From the modest suburban homes, the busy commercial corridor and the top-tier private education, Campbell Field is all about molding things together. The neighborhood began taking shape in the early 1900s when Donald J. Campbell and two business partners started CWC Foundry, creating one of many foundries still operating in Muskegon. It became a prominent employer for thousands who melted and molded metal into casts to make automotive parts. After work, many would come home to the same houses that make up Campbell Field's current subdivisions. "As a kid, it was a nice place to live," says Tim Updyke, a Realtor with Five Star Real Estate, who grew up in Campbell Field. "I'd play street hockey with my friends, and we'd come in when the street lights came on. It's pretty much still the same." While kids enjoy playing outside, Updyke says homebuyers are drawn to the housing prices, where the median is $151,000, compared to the citywide median of $190,000.
Campbell Field is located near Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan.

A primary shopping destination in Muskegon
On the south side of Campbell Field, the junction of Sherman Boulevard and Henry Street serve as the main commercial corridor for all of Muskegon. There's Aldi and Gordon Food Service Store for typical grocery needs, along with Supermercado San Jose, which offers Mexican specialty foods. Meanwhile, Walmart and Meijer are about 1 mile south. The area also has several local restaurants, such as G&L Chili Dogs, where the specialty is in the name. Hank's Tavern is another local favorite, offering a fusion of American and Mexican food with indoor and outdoor seating. Laketon Avenue on the neighborhood's north side has a few restaurants, including Lakeside Café, which serves homestyle breakfast all day. El Tapatio is not only a local favorite but a Michigan staple. In 2018, it was named the best Mexican restaurant in Michigan by MLive, a statewide news organization. The family-owned restaurant has been serving authentic Mexican dishes with homemade tortillas since 2004.

Modest bungalows and brand-new homes
Campbell Field's straight residential streets are predominantly lined with bungalows and ranch-style homes from the early 1900s to 1940s. They're built on approximately 0.15-acre lots with fenced backyards. Bungalows typically have open or enclosed front porches, while ranch styles have an attached garage in the front or a detached garage in the back. Both styles of homes can be anywhere from 600 to 2,000 square feet, with prices ranging from $100,000 to $220,000. The neighborhood has a few empty lots, starting to fill with new Craftsman-style houses. With bright vinyl siding and white trim, these three-bedroom homes were built for immediate occupancy and feature modern interiors and attached garages. They're similarly priced at under $280,000.
