A small Muskegon neighborhood with a church-run neighborhood association
Modest single-family homes line the residential streets of Steele, a quarter-square-mile community on the far east side of Muskegon. With Steele being the city's smallest neighborhood, homes are typically in short supply. However, when they hit the market, they usually sell below the citywide median of $190,000. Steele is more than just a small group of homes, though. Jericho Road Church runs the Steele Neighborhood Association, providing helpful services to the community. Pastor Jim Zatko of Jericho Road started the neighborhood association in 2022 and serves as the treasurer. "We were the only neighborhood without an association for 15 to 20 years," says Zatko, "We're big on having monthly meetings and getting people together to talk about their thoughts and concerns." The neighborhood association also provides helpful services to low-income residents, works together to keep the streets clean, and organizes events to foster a close community spirit.

Neighborhood meetings, cleanups and fun events
The Steele Neighborhood Association hosts a monthly meeting at Jericho Road Church. Zatko says a different city worker comes to each meeting, whether it be someone with parks and recreation, the city manager or even the mayor. A neighborhood police officer assigned to Steel also attends each meeting to address any safety concerns. Along with having two Dumpster days a year for people to clear out their garbage, the neighborhood association and church run a quarterly cleanup. "We walk around and pick trash," says Zatko. "Often times, residents will join us in that effort." To assist those struggling financially, a food bank is held at the church every Thursday. They also have a Christmas store where people can pick out presents for free to put under the Christmas tree. Residents also participate in fun community events, including an Easter egg hunt, trunk-or-treating and annual block parties. "We do at least two block parties per year," says Zatko. "We'll do a cookout and have bounce houses and games for everyone. It's a good turnout, between 50 to 80 people."
Bungalows and ranch-style homes
Steele is made up of bungalows and ranch-style homes built between the 1920s and '60s on approximately quarter-acre lots. Though many of these houses rest a few feet apart, some lie next to an empty lot or two. Those on the far north side feature backyards that face woods. Most bungalows have enclosed or covered front porches, and the area's ranch-style homes typically come with attached or detached garages. Both housing styles can be anywhere from 700 to 2,100 square feet, with prices generally ranging from $50,000 to $180,000, though some properties have reached $200,000.
