Arcadian Shores is a golf course community along the Grand Strand
Weaving around a golf course, Arcadian Shores is an active waterfront community in Myrtle Beach. Locals can spend their mornings teeing off at Arcadian Shores Golf Club and then walk to the neighborhood’s portion of the Grand Strand to fish off the Apache Pier. U.S. Route 17, locally known as Kings Highway, is a major shopping and dining corridor on the community’s northern edge. With easy access to the beach and commercial options, Arcadian Shores does attract tourists. “Most people are first introduced to Arcadian Shores because they vacation here,” says Elliot Serral, a Realtor with eXp Realty who is also an Arcadian Shores resident. The neighborhood is home to several campgrounds and beachside resorts, but Serral adds that many vacationers eventually move here full-time because of the close-knit community. “When you come here for so many summers in a row and golf with the same guys, you end up just wanting to live here all the time.”
Condos mix with townhouses and single-family homes
Mid- and high-rise condo complexes built between the 1970s and early 2000s make up most of the neighborhood. Buildings include The Pointe, a 10-story-tall inland complex with 51 units, and Margate Towers, a 29-story oceanfront community with 173 units. Complexes here typically have HOA fees, private parking lots and units with one to three bedrooms. There are also a few townhouses, stilt-style single-family homes and cottages. Condo and townhouse prices range from about $215,000 to around $600,000. Single-family homes typically cost between $400,000 and $850,000. Tropical storms and high tides place Arcadian Shores in a FEMA-designated, high-risk flood zone, so flood insurance is mandatory here.
Arcadian Shores Golf Club is public
Opened in 1974, Arcadian Shores Golf Club’s 18-hole course stretches around lakes and oak trees. The course is public, which Serral says is rare for the area. “Myrtle Beach has tons of golf courses, but most of them have insane membership fees. You just have to pay for tee times per player at Arcadian Shores.” Morning tee times cost $98, while afternoon slots are $85. Several private facilities, including Dunes Golf and Beach Club, are within 5 miles of Arcadian Shores.
The beach and Apache Pier are a quick walk away
During the summer, locals carry coolers and chairs as they walk to Myrtle Beach’s 60-mile-long sandy shoreline. Hibben Memorial Park on Shore Drive offers public beach access, but it doesn’t have a parking lot. Serral says leaving early to set up on the beach is essential. “Because of the hotels and campgrounds here, we have to compete with tourists to get a good spot.” Tent sites and RV campgrounds cover the 27-acre Apache Family Campground. Locals and campers alike can catch flounder, sea bass, and snapper off the 1,206-foot-long Apache Pier, where live music is performed nightly.
Shopping and dining along Kings Highway
Several big box stores and major shopping centers surround Kings Highway. Locals can grab groceries at Kroger or Walmart Supercenter. Tanger Outlets takes up the neighborhood’s northeastern corner. The open-air mall has over 100 stores, including Lululemon, Ulta Beauty and Old Navy. The highway—lined with seafood restaurants, steakhouses and hibachi spots—also earns the nickname Restaurant Row. But Serral says locals typically avoid going out to eat there. “Most of Restaurant Row is just tourist traps, but Arcadian Shores has some great local spots that aren’t there.” Picnic tables sit behind sand dunes at Breakfast By The Sea, located within the Ocean Park RV campsite. Beer signage decorates wooden walls at Flip Flops Bar & Grill, a bright blue shack that serves fried seafood. Downtown Myrtle Beach, 9 miles south, has a boardwalk with amusement park rides, ice cream shops and more restaurant options.
B grades for Cape Henlopen Public Schools
Kids can attend prekindergarten and kindergarten at Myrtle Beach Child Development Center and continue to Myrtle Beach Primary for first and second grade. Both schools are unrated by Niche. Third through fifth grade students can go to B-rated Myrtle Beach Elementary before attending Myrtle Beach Middle and Myrtle Beach High, which both earn B pluses. The high school offers Advanced Placement classes like calculus, Spanish and U.S. government.
Arcadian Shores is traffic-heavy
Kings Highway reaches Wilmington, 69 miles north, and Charleston, 105 miles south. Serral says Arcadian Shores is a traffic-heavy area. “It’s always crowded with tourists driving to their hotels or going to Restaurant Row. It’s especially bad during the summer, but that’s an issue for all of Myrtle Beach.” The neighborhood doesn’t have any bus stops. Grand Strand Medical Center, less than 4 miles south, has 403 beds and an emergency room. Myrtle Beach International Airport is about 13 miles in the same direction.
