A residential reprieve from the tourist beach towns
When people think of the Outer Banks, they tend to mention Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk and Nags Head. Although it’s just one turn away from the heart of Bodie Island onto Colington Road, Colington Harbour rarely comes up. That’s just how folks here like it — private and gated, this neighborhood might just be one of the Outer Banks’ best-kept secrets. It’s home to one of the highest concentrations of permanent residents in the area, with roughly 3,500 year-rounders. “Colington Harbour is a family community,” says Daphne Degabrielle, a broker with Outer Banks Realty Group. “If you look at the areas closer to the beach, there’s no neighborhoods. You’ll find kids there, sure, but they’re not going to know each other.” By comparison, she says, Colington Harbour is a place where residents can get to know their neighbors without the constant coming-and-going of vacation rentals. “It’s close to the schools, it has amenities and it has canals,” Degabrielle says.
Canalfront houses with beachy styles
Rather than sidewalks, the homes in Colington Harbour are connected by a network of canals that feed into the Roanoke Sound where it converges with the Albemarle and Currituck sounds. Most houses in this neighborhood are equipped with a dock and direct access to the water, making it just as easy to get around by sea as by land. “It was developed as a boating community,” Degabrielle says. “I’d say that about half of the people living there have a boat or multiple boats.” Some homes sit farther inland, though they typically have plenty of room to park a boat on larger, wooded lots. Though Colington Harbour is situated on the sound, beachy house styles persist here. Shingle siding and vibrant exteriors are common features, as are wraparound balconies and wooden piling. A majority of homes list above $400,000, with some prices even climbing to $1 million. The neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.
Waterfront activities reign supreme
Colington Harbour is home to one exclusive park operated by the neighborhood association. Soundfront Park sits right on the beachy shores where the Roanoke, Albemarle and Currituck sounds converge, with calm waters marked off by ropes and buoys providing a safe place for families to swim. Mature oaks line the coast, offering shade to picnickers dining al fresco. Bulkheads are the park’s preferred fishing and crabbing spots, and there’s a cleaning station for fresh catches. Right next door is the private Colington Harbour Yacht and Racquet Club, which houses many of the island’s amenities, including an outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts. A community boat launch next to the clubhouse is commonly used by the yacht club. Aside from social activities on the water, the club is known for its youth sailing camps hosted during the summer.
Kids attend school in Kill Devil Hills
Families can enroll their kids in Dare County Schools, with three schools right off Colington Island in Kill Devil Hills. First Flight Elementary, First Flight Middle and First Flight High are located in three separate buildings that are part of one large campus along Veterans Drive, and all three schools score a B-plus from Niche. The schools are right next to the Wright Brothers National Memorial, and First Flight High’s library features panoramic views overlooking the site. The high school is also well-known for its competitive athletics, with the First Flight Nighthawks regularly placing in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Wells Fargo Cup, which ranks schools based on their all-around sports performance.
Dine just outside of the neighborhood gates
Past the private entrance to the neighborhood, Colington Harbor is entirely residential, but a few small businesses serve the community from just beyond the gates. TJs is the neighborhood’s main convenience store, providing fried chicken and subs hot from the grill. Continuing down Colington Road, there’s a handful of locally owned eateries, including Higher Grounds Coffee & Ice Cream. Operating out of a beachy, bright blue shack, this dessert-oriented café’s specialty is an espresso milkshake called the Riptide. Dinner can be enjoyed at Harbor Grill & Pizza, a casual but lively pizzeria and sports bar, or for something a bit more upscale, the Saltbox Café, a down-to-earth cottage restaurant, is known for its steak and seafood. Errand runs typically require a trip to central Kill Devil Hills about 5 miles away, where there’s a Publix, a Lowe’s and a few other big-box stores.
Right off a main road into town
Colington Road serves as the main thoroughfare for entering or exiting the neighborhood, connecting residents to U.S. Route 158. “Once you turn off that bypass onto Colington Road, it’s like heaven because you’re out of the rat race,” Degabrielle says. Kill Devil Hills is roughly 5 miles away, a drive that typically takes about 10 minutes. Most big-box stores and other essential island services are located in town, or residents can get onto the North Carolina mainland via the Wright Memorial Bridge, approximately 10 miles away or a 20-minute drive.
Coastal living comes with challenges
Although the sound is typically calmer than the ocean, homes in Colington Harbour are still at high risk of flooding. According to Degabrielle, however, flooding insurance still tends to be cheaper on the sound side of Bodie Island. Medical care can be another issue for coastal communities, but Colington Harbour is about 10 miles from the Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
