In Niche’s 2024 Best City to Live in America
Knoch Knolls is the kind of community where neighbors check in with each other in early spring to see whether the Virginia Blue Bells at Knoch Knolls Park have bloomed. Knoch Knolls is in the southern part of Naperville, Niche’s 2024 Best City to Live in America, Best City to Raise a Family in America and the City with the Best Public Schools in America. Believe it or not, the list goes on. According to Beth Frederick at the DuPage County Historical Museum, Knoch Knolls was named after the Knoch family, the original owners of the land. The Knochs are this neighborhood’s first and greatest benefactors, as their donations of land continued up through the 1980s. Other philanthropists have followed suit, with the award-winning Knoch Knolls Nature Center being the latest public-private addition to this suburb.
"Homes go fast..."
According to Nicole Meyers, Knoch Knolls resident and Realtor with Christie's International Real Estate, “Homes go fast here. It’s a relatively good price point, it's super close to Downtown Naperville, and the schools are insanely good.” The subdivision was built in the 1980s with posh neo-colonial mansions made of brick on large, green lots. Some newer palatial modern farmhouses have been added, but the neighborhood has retained its character. Prices range between $700,000 and $1 million. Recently, one of the largest properties on the DuPage River, a massive neo-Victorian estate on an acre overlooking the river, listed for $3.4 million, but that’s an outlier.
Sizable lots in Knoch Knolls allow for room while still maintaining a sense of community.

The Knoch Knolls Nature Center and DuPage River
The DuPage River, which runs alongside Knoch Knolls, seems to mirror the friendly and open character of the Midwesterners who visit it. Mellow enough for a swim or an innertube ride, the kayak/canoe launch sees a fair share of boaters adventuring downriver when the water level is high and moving at a fast clip. In 2014, the vast Knoch Knolls Nature Center opened to immediate fanfare, winning a sustainable design award and quickly becoming a neighborhood favorite for its family and kid-centered activities. Kelley Munch, Senior Communications Specialist for the city of Naperville, says, “The residents support and respect the parks and enjoy the events that take place during the year.” Knoch Knolls Park has grown to encompass almost 100 acres and offers miles of paved and dirt trails and, of course, Virginia Blue Bells. Old Sawmill Park is a small playground area nearby. Residents can continue a few blocks north to enter 1,800 acres of wilderness in the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve.
