Old farmlands turned into a Naperville suburb
Sitting beside the DuPage River, Old Farm is a Naperville subdivision with plenty of parks and outdoor space for residents to choose from. The neighborhood’s history is still prevalent in its name—before there were houses in Old Farm, it was farmlands. The subdivision’s quiet streets still feel quiet and peaceful like the farm, but residents are only a short drive, or bike, down to downtown Naperville, where they can enjoy the city’s active social calendar or to the many restaurants along 75th Street.
Just south of Old Farm is The Conservation Foundation at McDonald Farm.

Old Farm's neighborhood parks within walking distance
The community features residential parks, but people don’t have to go far for Naperville’s hiking trails. Old Farm Park is mainly open space, perfect for a game of soccer or a picnic, but there is a playground for the kids. Its location at the heart of Old Farm means some homes are back in the park for increased accessibility. On the northern side of the neighborhood, Spring-Field Park offers more open fields with a basketball court and a playground. The DuPage River flows along the eastern side of the neighborhood, featuring a sledding hill at Weigand Riverfront Park. “You also get access to the bike paths which you can take to downtown,” says broker and Naperville resident Walt Burrell with Coldwell Baker Commercial. To the west, Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve features over 1,800 acres of protected prairies and grasslands, with hiking trails and picnic areas throughout.

Local farmers markets and summer wine walks
With downtown just a few miles away, residents can head into the city center for annual and seasonal events. “Every Saturday, there’s a farmers market throughout the summer,” Burrell says. “We’ll even have to this year.” The addition of the Naperville Artisan Market on select weekends gives residents more opportunities to shop locally. Naperville also offers wine walks throughout the summer, where guests can sample wines and food from different downtown restaurants. For Labor Day weekend, the city comes together for Last Fling and says farewell to summer with a parade, carnival and live music.
Important to know about Naperville's history
At the height of the civil rights movement in the '60s, people started urging Naperville to improve the city with more civil rights and fair housing initiatives. Big events included a visit and speech from Martin Luther King Jr. While people of color only made up 3% of the population by 1980, this percentage has since grown to 38%.
