Elegant homes on the border between Naperville and Bolingbrook
The name “River Woods” can be attributed to the community’s proximity to the public forested areas and the majestic banks of the DuPage River, which both envelop this region. This suburban enclave is located virtually on the border between its home city of Naperville and nearby Bolingbrook, with Washington Street bridging the gap and connecting residents to the amenities of each. Diverse dining options and a short 15 minute drive to downtown Naperville are perks of this community, though quiet intimacy and upscale living define its well-trimmed and carefully paved streetscapes.
Colonial-inspired homes established in 1989
From their grand, colonial-inspired exteriors with brick and stone details to professionally manicured landscapes and strategically-places perennial flower beds, River Woods was custom built in the late 1980s and early 1990s to exude classic elegance. The spacious tree-lined streets lend to cul-de-sac living and envelope the similarly-styled Heritage Knolls subdivision, connecting sidewalks and amenities between the two. Residents pull away from wide driveways accommodating two to three garage spaces, or leave the car at home and hit the pavement to reach the local elementary school or park. Home prices start around $600,000 and reach up to $1.3 million.
Many beautifully updated two-story brick homes can be found in River Woods.

A clear-cut school district distinction
"On the extreme south end of Naperville, the school district boundaries cross over into Plainfield School District attendance as well," says Eva Burns, associate broker with ReMax of Naperville who has sold homes all over the city. Though the neighborhood approaches Naperville’s southern border, it doesn’t quite cross over into the neighboring school district that houses next door communities like Bolingbrook and Woodridge. “River Woods is in Naperville School District #203,” Burns says. Students can walk each morning to River Woods Elementary School before attending Madison Junior High School, each receiving a respective A-plus and A from Niche. US News & World Report ranks Naperville Central High School the 27th best overall option in Illinois and within the top 3% in the country, while Niche awards the school another A-plus. While the school’s “three-story wing” segment was constructed in 1950, it maintains recent upgrades and sits right outside the city’s downtown district on Aurora Avenue. Along with prestigious sports teams, Naperville Central is home to a championship-winning NCHS Science Olympiad Team, Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Team, and “Butch,” a mummy dating back to the year 55 B.C.

From Riverwoods Park to Weigand Riverfront hills
Three major city parks surround River Woods, making good on its apt name. “Like all of Naperville, this region is known for its acclaimed parks,” says Kelley Munch, Senior Communications Specialist for the city of Naperville. “The residents support and respect the parks and enjoy the events that take place during the year.” River Woods' namesake greenspace is perched on DuPage River and provides naturally worn trails that skirt its banks for walkers, runners, skateboarders and cyclists. Weigand Riverfront Park also grants river views often dotted with great blue herons, and depending on water level, dogs may be able to go for a dip on their morning walk. Grassy knolls turn into sled-able snowy hills in the colder months. To the south of the community is DuPage River Park, which provides 40 miles of trail systems, additional river views and a picnic area for alfresco dining.

Heading to Bolingbrook for food and retail shopping
Most of the neighborhood’s chain fare and local eateries sit at the junction of North Weber Road and West Boughton Road in nearby Bolingbrook. Ko Sushi is a casual, yet intimate restaurant that serves up classic Japanese dishes amidst a moody, low-light atmosphere. Just across the road is Covo, a straightforward Greek joint with rustic chic decor, offering pitas, gyros and salads street-style from the counter. Convenient grocery shopping can be found at ALDI, Jewel-Osco and Meijer, and Maple Park Place contains major retailers such as Kohl’s, Target and Marshall’s. Regal Bolingbrook rounds out the offerings on Boughton Road, while breweries, fine dining and locally-owned boutiques are a 15-minute drive away in downtown Naperville.

Heading north to Naperville, south to Bolingbrook, and east to Chicago
River Woods residents are a 5-mile drive from the Naperville Metra Station, a no-frills stop on the BSNF Line to downtown Chicago. Drivers braving the commute head down Interstates 88 and 290 for 24 miles towards the city center. Frequent flyers can choose from Chicago O’Hare International airport, 29 miles away, and Chicago Midway International Airport, 27 miles away. In general, driving is the preferred mode of transportation for River Woods residents, and they can choose between amenities in Bolingbrook and Naperville. Edward-Elmhurst Health Center sits in the former, offering non-invasive medical procedures, while Endeavor Health Edward Hospital covers the rest.
