North Gulch

Suburban Neighborhood in Nashville, Tennessee

Davidson County 37203

Downtown Nashville neighborhood that exhibits Music City’s growth

During the late 19th century, the North Gulch — which also goes by Capitol View — went by an arguably less flattering name and often played host to violent Old West style squabbles. Fueled by massive projects like the Amazon-involving Nashville Yards, this neighborhood that’s within view of the Tennessee State Capitol is now among the parts of town that illustrates the Music City’s evolution and growth in the 21st century. “I would describe it as a vibrant, open space with tons of options for food and fun, and several amazing apartment complexes to break you into the city. To help you decide where you want to end up,” says Billy Bruster, an associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Woodmont Realty, who’s made several sales in the neighborhoods surrounding the North Gulch. Typical days see pedestrians bustling through the neighborhood and passing by rows of both modern and repurposed low- and high-rise buildings that house anything from apartments and offices to trendy bars, eateries and fitness studios. Along the way, they might pass by sites like the Capitol View Star or one of several colorful murals that give this otherwise urban pocket some artistic flair. Weekly activities can involve burning off steam on heavy bags in a studio facing a lawn that itself occasionally hosts outdoor Pilates sessions during the summer months. “There’s many cool restaurants and shopping. It’s just a cool, hip part of Nashville, a part of Nashville that’s growing,” says Allyson Woosley, an agent with Parks Real Estate in Green Hills, who’s made several sales in the Gulch neighborhood bordering Capitol View to the south. “It’s located in an area where there’s a lot of tourism. It’s a very good location for people coming into the city who want to have things to do.”

Memphis style barbecue, brews and pinball

The neighborhood offers a wide variety of dining and drinking establishments. Just a walk down from the Residences at Capitol View apartments, many will find tasty brews and gourmet pub fare at the M.L.Rose Craft Beer & Burgers. As patrons sit back with good company, they’ll easily spot a variety of wall decor like fluorescent paintings of a buffalo hunt, a Lamborghini Countach and Batman. Also in this area is one of just three Joe Muer Seafood restaurants in the country. The nearly century-old Detroit-rooted establishment is popular among those hungry for fresh seafood. The dining scene here, of course, wouldn’t be complete without some barbecue. Those looking for an authentic taste of the highly touted Memphis style will find it at Central BBQ, which opened its first location outside of the M-Town in the Capitol View area. A Publix on this side of the neighborhood offers one grocery shopping option. Other neighborhood favorites include Pins Mechanical on the south end. In addition to enjoying more brews, patrons can take part in some bowling matches or try their luck on one of the venue’s many pinball machines. Whole Foods right along Broadway provides another grocery shopping option.

Burning off steam at HOTBOX and urban strolls on Gulch Greenway

Whether they’re looking to quickly burn off calories, find a spot to launch a bike ride or just a place to let their dogs freely roam, North Gulch residents have no shortage of options. Right across the street from the Residences at Capitol View Apartments is HOTBOX Fitness Nashville, a studio that offers kickboxing classes and sets of weights for those looking to keep up their strength training. Club Pilates uses the low-cut lawn just outside of HOTBOX to do special monthly outdoor sessions from April to August. Frankie Pierce Park, with fixtures like a metal and net jungle gym, offers a modern playground for children to burn off energy, as well as a dog park. The park connects to the Gulch Greenway, which runs the length of the neighborhood. Users of this tree-lined path will pass by some garden-themed murals, and cyclists needing to tend to their bikes will find a fix-it station. Those interested in some free planned activities will find some options, too. The East Nasty Running Club gets together during the first few months of the year to offer half-marathon and marathon training. The community also offers a pickleball league.

Massive condo project coming near YMCA

All the housing that’s currently available in the North Gulch consists of rentals found in buildings that reflect much of the upscale urban architecture found throughout downtown Nashville. Examples include the Residences at Capitol View, a multi-story complex with a mixed brick and concrete exterior and other features like tall windows and glass balconies. However, those interested in buying shouldn’t overlook this part of the city. The ball is currently rolling on a massive project that will involve both a renovation of the downtown YMCA and the construction of a building that will house well over 100 condos. Going on Church Street just a few steps outside of the neighborhood’s bounds, the units — which will be joined by even more apartments — will go into what will be the city’s tallest building. The building will blend with several neighboring structures with its sleek glass exterior. Price points for condos in parts of downtown, like the neighboring Gulch, can typically run from $400,000 to $600,000 for ones that are about 1,000 square feet or smaller. Price points can go well over $1 million for some units that are larger than 2,000 square feet.
